Thought I'd have a look at a few Darwin related things in Edinburgh following the fantastic HSS/ESHS conference this week, including the grave of Charles Darwin (1758-78), a medical student in the city and son of Erasmus Darwin, and a memorial to his more famous nephew.

Also pleased to get to Axminster, just up the road from Lyme, where a local historian assured me that this was William Buckland's birthplace and childhood home. William Daniel Conybeare's huge rectory, next to the parish church, was just across the road from the original Axminster carpet factory.

Born #OnThisDay in 1914 was actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr. As well as acting in 30 films, during the Second World War she co-developed a frequency-hopping guidance system for American torpedoes, the principles of which are used in Bluetooth and WiFi technologies today. #WomenInSTEM
