I don’t think I’m ever going to get the appeal of pivoting to video for podcasts. I’ve been listening to podcasts for 20 years, and never once have I thought, my God, I need to SEE these people! I’m on a walk or doing the dishes, I don’t need video.

Every day that I clock into the transcription of Victorian records factory I resolve to make my own record-keeping neater and more organised for future scholars. The clerks at Chambers's Journals did not have such forethought.

Six years ago a mate I really fancied was supposed to move to Scotland and, when his rental flat fell through, I asked him out for a pint. By the time he actually got on the train to move a few weeks later we had both individually decided we were an item.

I am grateful that there is a documentary film about the 1980s/90s post-hardcore band Fugazi. I am grateful it was shown in an arts and events space near Central Leeds. I am beyond grateful that this screening marked ten years of Leeds' Cineforum film club 💖

We’ve lived through the nearly complete systematic unwinding of the postwar public university, which for all its faults, was premised on the idea that not only aristocrats could be intellectuals, & that having non-aristocratic intellectuals was better for knowledge & therefore better for everyone

Finally watching #HouseofGuinness and unfortunately what I have learned is that if a product is repeatedly mentioned in the context of a gritty (yet funny!) drama set in the nineteenth century I will definitely buy it.

The saga of trying to repaint the kitchen/garden door continues. We've managed to get to what we can only describe as lead whitewash on the garden side of the door. Now to sugar soap and scour the bits that are stuck, including the fact that THE HINGES WERE PAINTED.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

If you had asked me last year why I hated landlords, I would have said because ours put out rent up by 40% with no warning. If you ask me now why I hate landlords, it's because I'm taking years off my life stripping layers upon layers of cream gloss paint from our house now.

Gloria Steinem didn't always get it right (see: working for the dang CIA in the '60s) but she was my introduction to feminism through a reference in Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries. Reading about her and her work as a teenager helped me put into words what I saw and felt about gender. RIP.
