I had to share. Found this poem about St. Paul, Minnesota ice from June Jordan in her 1980 "From America" poem from her book of poems, Passion. This was in my copy of "Directed by Desire" collected poems of June Jordan.
From America: A Poem in Process
June Jordan, from the collection Passion (1980)
Dedicated to Christopher David Meyer
ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA
Ice
Between me and the earth itself it’s ice
between me and the single runners single
houses single cars slid wide on ice
it’s ice
between me and the breath I need to melt
the frozen mouth of something soft
something mud
something conversational perhaps
it’s ice
I walk across the roots of trees
enormous elm tree shelters from the faraway
firing stars
elm trees scribbling a confusion of dark branches
that must mystify the simple
sky stretched into cloudy scar
tissues torn by snow and sleet interruptions
of a wan and waning
moan
I hear no whispering no shout no scream
I walk particular to keep upright the whole head cold
stung tight; It’s pick and toe to cross the ice
the massive avenues a fascist scale a
monumental holding action under gossamer
and glossy hoar frost assault
sweet home
sweet home
oh lord: I wonder
if I’m ever gone get
home
Carrying paperbag provisions from a supermarket
and the wolves leap closer howling
from the corners of a formal place
where little moves besides the moon
I am too small
to change anything at all
I am too small
to change anything at all
where little moves besides the moon

Be glad that you have something to say, someone to say it to, and that you can say it until you are all worn out. […] I insist this is a lullaby. Richard Siken @coppercanyonpress.bsky.social
I DO KNOW SOME THINGS

RICHARD SIKEN

(Copper Canyon, 2025)

In front of Halloween lights on my mantelTRUE LOVE

A dog bites down on a stick of dynamite and takes off running. They are going to explode together. Imagine: making someone feel like that, making them lose their mind like that. At the bars, I used a fake name. I was as blurry and undefinable as everyone else, equally afraid of being alone or being touched. My fears canceled each other out. Pure ambivalence. It made me dangerous. Still, we do what we can. The barn dance was a yawn. The barn dance caller told us how to move, so it wasn't that much fun. We got out, quick as a lamb's tail. Two shakes. One, two. I don't know how to say it, so I'll say this: Something bright, then holes. Beauty pours in. Open your beart then. And if you find yourself caught under the sycamore trees in a sudden rain, drenched and thunderstruck—which would be fine—made breathless by the simplest thing, say yes. Yes, anything you. Love, Love. It isn't a word; it's the sound a pebble makes.
Some swerve to pass, some drink to win, some watch while the man strays, singing, into the ditch. Be glad that you have something to say, someone to say it to, and that you can say it until you are all worn out. A long time ago, maybe not so long, I knew a man who was slippery and morally flexible. I loved him. Sure, loved him.
It lasted exactly as long as it was supposed to. I propose there is a man somewhere, chalk-faced in evening light, traveling furiously toward you-and the sun's going down, and his windows are open, and everything's coming over the horizon on cue. If you haven't started preparing yourself, I strongly suggest you do. How long will it last? It's hard to say. The captain is always silent after the ship goes down. It's a tragedy, like everything, but the sea is only waist-deep. I insist this is a lullaby.

A teal background features the cover of Nerve: Unlearning Workshop Ableism to Develop Your Disabled Writing Practice, along with the teal and black Wordgathering logo, teal medication capsules, and purple text reading, “The one book on writing that understands the concept of spoon theory, acknowledges the veracity of crip time, and addresses the reality that not all writers live pain-free lives or have the capacity to sit at a desk, hold a pen, or put in hours of work without causing harm to our bodies or brains.”

#PoetryMoment "Statement of Teaching Philosophy" by Keith Leonard from Waxwing, Spring 2021
Statement of Teaching Philosophy

Keith Leonard

My students want certainty. They want it so badly. They respect science and have memorized complex formulas. I don't know how to tell my students their parents are still just as scared. The bullies get bigger and vaguer and you cannot punch a cloud. I have eulogies for all my loved ones prepared, but cannot include this fact in my lesson plans. The best teacher I ever had told me to meet him at the basketball court. We played pick-up for hours. By the end, I lay panting on the hardwood and couldn't so much as stand.

He told me to describe the pain in my chest. I tried. I couldn't find the words. Not exactly. Listen, he said, that's where language ends.

Which book in your public school library had a magnetic hold on your heart? Show me. Tell me why. My school was rural, tiny, K-8 so—“Search for a Living Fossil.” I met a brilliant female protagonist in these pages. She learned for the sake of learning. She lived far away. Men believed her. O, wow.
The cover of a book, cream-colored with navy blue title “Search for a Living Fossil: The Story of the Coelacanth.” In faint mint green the writer’s name appears above the title: Eleanor Clymer. Below the title it reads “Illustrated by Joan Berg” in even fainter mint green. The book is worn from use.
There is a navy blue scientific-style line illustration of a coelacanth, a type of fish, on the cover. Scattered below the coelacanth are four different types of tropical shells, illustrated similarly, also in navy blue. In faint mint green, the same style of illustration, sea grasses are barely visible. They rise from behind the shells and the fish to the top of the cover. Entering from the left side, just below the title, are a few streaks of very light blue; these are more gestural. They’re evocative of currents of water.

This edition is from 1963. Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, New York, library binding.

Yeah this would probably radicalize me in ways I dont want to fully contemplate if I was in this man's position
"Local contractor Bud Bolton, who lives just downstream from the RV parks on the Ingram-Kerrville border that suffered heavy losses of life, testified that he saw 108 RVs swept downstream, some of them with families still inside. Bolton, who woke up on his own when there was water on his doorstep around 4:15 a.m. said 20 fire trucks and rescue vehicles were parked near his home but no one knocked on his door to warn him. When Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, halted Bolton’s testimony, he seized the mic again saying, "I lost 27 people that I knew" before being cut off for exceeding his time limit."
