Two-Way Fixed Effects and Modern Difference-in-Differences: An Empirical Comparison

Peter Hull, Brown University
8 October 2026

This note compares two-way fixed effects (TWFE) estimates from top general-interest journals in economics with estimates from the group-time difference-in-differences estimator of Callaway and Sant’Anna (2021; CSA) and the imputation estimator of Borusyak, Jaravel, and Spiess (2024; BJS). We use recovered observation-level data and focus on binary treatments with staggered adoption. Sign reversals are relatively rare, and especially so with statistically significant differences.

Good news about international students
We're writing to inform you that a federal judge in Boston has issued a preliminary injunction that prevents the government's new rule eliminating Duration of Status for F and J visa holders from going into effect on
September 15.
The injunction temporarily blocks implementation of the rule while the court determines the full merits of the case. The lawsuit was filed by Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts, and NAFSA, among others.
While the injunction is in place, your Duration of Status designation remains intact, and the rule has no impact on your visa status. However, the order is not a permanent resolution; the government can appeal the judge's ruling, and there may be a lengthy legal process, which could end with the rule ultimately going into effect.

Melenchon has a realistic plan for solving France's chronic deficit problem. He wants to default on its debt. If France does this, no one will buy any bonds it issues, and it will immediately have to implement severe austerity, slashing spending by at least 5% of GDP to get its deficit down to 0.
