The vast majority denied SNAP are denied for procedural reasons. Even 4 in 10 of those with NO INCOME in the previous year are denied, with 80% of those denied for *procedural reasons*, or, effectively, missing paperwork. And The One Big Beautiful Bill is making this so much worse.

Implications of this is immigrants are only worth what they can produce in the labor market This is why I hate talking about the “economic/fiscal value” of immigrants separate from inherent value as humans. Working to unlearn this narrative that many economists, including myself, have fallen into

hope this chart helps more people see where we've been and why we need to fully abolish ICE, not just reform and rebrand it
"Line chart titled 'Total Arrests and Criminal Conviction Status 2015-2025,' showing ICE arrest data from October 2015 to October 2025. Two lines are plotted against dates (Sep 2015 to Sep 2025) on the x-axis: a solid black line for 'Total Arrests' (left y-axis, 0-1200) and a dashed green line for 'Percent of Arrested People with Criminal Convictions' (right y-axis, 0-90%). Three vertical red dashed lines mark inauguration dates: Trump's First Inauguration (around Jan 2017), Biden's Inauguration (around Jan 2021), and Trump's Second Inauguration (around Jan 2025). Total arrests hover around 250-350 from 2015 through 2020, drop sharply to under 100 after Biden's inauguration, rise gradually through 2021-2023, jump substantially in late 2023, dip again in 2024, then spike sharply to around 1000+ after Trump's second inauguration in 2025. The percent convicted of a crime starts near 85% in 2015, declines gradually to around 60% by 2020, drops further to about 20-30% during 2021-2022, rises back to 50-60% by 2023-2024, then falls again to around 30% by late 2025. A note states the data comes from the Deportation Data Project, with criminal conviction data unavailable before October 2015 and arrest data unavailable before October 2011."

"Although arrests spiked at the outset of both Trump presidencies, the share of arrested individuals with criminal convictions fell significantly... A shift in ICE tactics partly explains this pattern, but even conditional on tactic, the share with a criminal conviction declined as arrests rose."

"Our results show a fundamental mismatch between the justifications for intensified immigration enforcement & the empirical patterns of that enforcement’s implementation." This valuable study puts so many communities' experiences in context. The data will also be so useful for others. Thank you!
Arrests per 100,000 noncitizens by AOR and method, relative to inauguration. Notes: Uses ICE ERO administrative arrest data from 2016, 2017, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Vertical red lines show inauguration dates. To obtain a rate arrests are divided by the number of noncitizens in the AOR (from the 2015 ACS for Term 1 and the 2023 ACS for Term 2), and multiplied by 100,000. To align the ICE classifications, the San Antonio AOR includes the Houston and San Antonio AORs in 2016–2017 and Harlingen, Houston, and San Antonio AORs in 2024–2026.

I am stunned that the constitutional question was so close. I thought it would be 6–3 or 7–2. It is profoundly disturbing that four justices would allow either the president or Congress to rewrite the plain text of the 14th Amendment. This is obviously a good outcome, but the margin is alarming.
