This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.

A lot of people can’t afford to commit to going gay full-time, so they go gay on a part-time basis, or as keen amateurs.

Oh and I read it because of The Housekeeper by Rose Tremain, fictional account of Du Maurier and the woman who inspired the character of Mrs Danvers. Some wild details are true.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook
X.com
Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

I’m sorry. I’m glad that Ireland has social safety nets in place, but I’m often furious and exhausted by how hard we have to fight to get the support to which we are legally entitled.

As I recall, hosts have to feed strangers before you ask them their name, so Odysseus eats chez Nausicca’s dad, and Menelaus feeds Telemachus. And maybe Odysseus’s men are a delicious snack to Polyphemus?

Speaking as someone who’s a bit closer to seeing the direct impacts of the MAGA murder of USAID than some, I just don’t have a ton of patience for people who want to condemn USAID for what it was and who also don’t have opinions or solutions on dealing with the hideous fallout of its destruction.

Is using them correctly just signalling to professional writers/editors/designers that you know your shit and pay attention to detail? It’s more than that. Typography has a wildly nerdy set of Rules, but it’s also an art. It’s about how things balance and flow. Characters, lines, space…

— Em dash makes a division in a sentence — something like this! It can be used to connect two thoughts or indicate a shift or interruption — a colon, semicolon, or parentheses might also work, but the humble em dash has a subtle difference in its style and flow.
