But yeah, AI is not the wave of the future. It's a cynical tool to make fake art without the direct input of actual artists so that corporations don't have to pay the artists themselves. Just like my proverbial car welding machine example.

The boundary on how easy it is to steal from individual artists will always be pushed. The question becomes, where do you draw the line? The record companies own the rights to most known songs. They can ai regurgitate stolen music until the end of time without ever paying a new artist again.

Crowley & Lady Frieda Harris changed a major arcana from Temperance to Art. Temperance is about the time it takes to create. Turbulence is part of the journey. In the Thoth deck, the word was changed to art as blacksmithing, to temper, had become less common. AI can’t temper. AI can’t art.

The problem with AI is that it's a simulacrum of music-making rather than the human activity of music-making itself. The fact that it trains on the music of others without compensating them is it's own economic problem, but it's not what makes it "fake music". It's the simulacrum aspect.

I take issue with the OP's framing of quodlibet and quotation in music because musical borrowings have existed in Western music since the Middle Ages. The first polyphony was basically just taking a cantus firmus (a song already written) and adding more parts to it.

AI apologists don't like the use of stolen when the record companies "own" the music, but we all know how unfair those contracts are. Many famous musicians have spoken out against how their work was taken. No contract signed in the 70s or 80s would include ai training. No artist would have agreed.
