Growing up in the 70s/80s with an older half-brother who was gay, I think the empathy extended naturally for me. I do remember reading Fletch and the Widow Bradley as a pre-teen, and it was either that or a movie of the week that gave me a specific person to consider

This is what I was gonna recommend, though I neither enjoy cooking nor consider myself "good at it." But for basic skills and why to prepare foods certain ways, this was great. I remember leaning heavily on the "beans and greens" section back in the day (@*********** got this in the divorce)
