I will not stop reading code anytime soon. LLMs can generate code that's correct and even performant, but I frequently find it too complex. And I hate accidental complexity - it compounds very quickly and leads to cruft, bugs, and, ultimately, slow and unreliable software.

I made a zine with instructions on how to build a cheap & effective air purifier (1-fan CR Box). The folder also has a presentation version of the instructions. Link

Materials are just a box fan, the box the fan comes in, & MERV 13 filter held together with tape (design based on optimizations/testing by David Elfstrom).

One of the reasons I don't take the "what about the rapists?" objection to abolition seriously is because after 250 years of the current system, an allegation of shoplifting is met with deadly force and a rape conviction gets probation. And the punishment for shoplifting is way, WAY more common.

It feels inhumane that you can’t opt out of commercials for addictive products. People should be able to one-click their way out of ever seeing ads for stuff like alcohol, drugs, and sports betting on apps and streaming services. This shouldn’t be controversial at all and should be very easy to do.

One of the VERY FIRST things done after the Constitutional Convention in 1787 was to have the text of the new Constitution translated into Dutch and German, which were at the time the two largest non-English language spoken in the United States. Here's the National Archives making this point:
The months between signing and ratification were a busy period for the country. The proceedings of the Constitutional Convention had been kept secret, so each state needed to inform its voters of what exactly the proposed new government contained. Congress therefore directed the state legislatures to call ratification conventions in each state, with delegates specifically elected to approve or disapprove the new government.

However, this meant that each state from New Hampshire to Georgia had to receive a copy of the text, submit it to public debate, elect delegates, meet, vote, and return the results to Philadelphia. In an era where the speed of travel was limited by horseback, stagecoach, and boat, this was no quick feat. After the end of the Convention the news of the Constitution spread out in a wave, and thousands of copies were republished by local printers and distributed for debate. A flurry of newspaper articles, pamphlets, and public meetings followed, hotly debating whether the Constitution would be a good framework for a new national government.

Part of the debate and ratification process involved translation: non-negligible portions of the electorate spoke languages other than English. To reach them, the document was translated into Dutch in New York and German in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

I'm just implementing stuff I think is interesting to get a feel for things. Which of these do we like better? I think the second one, because both Some and None are handled by the map. In the first one, it's kind of ugly and split up between the Some call and the ? operator. #rustlang
Two implementations of the add operator on a CheckedU8 type. The first uses the ? operator to return early if the result of checked_add on the internal u8 is None. The second implementation uses the Option::map function to avoid unwrapping at all.

What’s also great is reading the dialogue with Claude where it stops and says “I need to stop and be honest with you about something important” and reveals it deleted every single photo. Software built for dunces
This idiot’s convo with Claude:

desktop for easy navigation
Great, I have a clear plan. Let me get to work!
Attempted to delete Office temp lock files from Desktop >
I need to request delete permission first.
Updated todo list with Office cleanup and folder organization tasks >
Now let me create the folder structure and start organizing. I'll create the main folders first, then move files in parallel.
Updated todo list with completed file management tasks >
Now let me move all the screenshots — this is the big one. I'll use a script to parse the dates and route them to the right year/month folder.
Organized and moved screenshot files from Desktop >
All 755 screenshots moved. Now let me handle photos, documents, and the garbled folders in parallel:
Updated todo list with completed file cleanup tasks >
Now let me consolidate the remaining folders into the organized structure:
Checked Desktop directory contents and verified file organization >
I need to stop and be honest with you about something important. I made a mistake while reorganizing the photos.
When I tried to merge the lowercase "photos" folder with a new "Photos" folder, I didn't account for your Mac's case-insensitive filesystem - where "photos" and
"Photos" are treated as the same folder. My script ran rm -rf on what it thought was a separate empty folder, but it actually deleted your existing "photos" directory and its contents.
