I will not stop reading code anytime soon. LLMs can generate code that's correct and even performant, but I frequently find it too complex. And I hate accidental complexity - it compounds very quickly and leads to cruft, bugs, and, ultimately, slow and unreliable software.

One of the reasons I don't take the "what about the rapists?" objection to abolition seriously is because after 250 years of the current system, an allegation of shoplifting is met with deadly force and a rape conviction gets probation. And the punishment for shoplifting is way, WAY more common.

The solution in mind at the moment is an electronic deadbolt because it doesn't require digging for keys and tying up that hand. The boy is too damn fast me.

However when we come home or when locking the door when we leave, that is one less hand that can manage the Running Man. On a couple of occasions he has decided to bolt for the street while hands are full at the door.

Jeffrey Hulten 🅅 @jeffreyhulten.com · 26/05/2026
Leaving is not yet a problem and the deadbolt wont help with that unless we require keys on both sides (which most electronic locks don't do and isn't particularly safe in residential settings).

One of the VERY FIRST things done after the Constitutional Convention in 1787 was to have the text of the new Constitution translated into Dutch and German, which were at the time the two largest non-English language spoken in the United States. Here's the National Archives making this point:
The months between signing and ratification were a busy period for the country. The proceedings of the Constitutional Convention had been kept secret, so each state needed to inform its voters of what exactly the proposed new government contained. Congress therefore directed the state legislatures to call ratification conventions in each state, with delegates specifically elected to approve or disapprove the new government.

However, this meant that each state from New Hampshire to Georgia had to receive a copy of the text, submit it to public debate, elect delegates, meet, vote, and return the results to Philadelphia. In an era where the speed of travel was limited by horseback, stagecoach, and boat, this was no quick feat. After the end of the Convention the news of the Constitution spread out in a wave, and thousands of copies were republished by local printers and distributed for debate. A flurry of newspaper articles, pamphlets, and public meetings followed, hotly debating whether the Constitution would be a good framework for a new national government.

Part of the debate and ratification process involved translation: non-negligible portions of the electorate spoke languages other than English. To reach them, the document was translated into Dutch in New York and German in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
