I have this discussion with bar staff a lot. Often they mistake me for a quest or mission designer, which at some studios would be correct. "So, you write the plot?" is also a popular one, and not entirely incorrect, but they too are surprised at the amount of actual writing that goes into a game.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument. Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.
