Jan Lukas Kuhn
Arbeitskalender voll, Taschen leer

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Japanese green tea container boxes
Stacked in neat rows along dark timber shelves within a traditional merchant storehouse, these weathered wooden tea chests—known as chabako (茶箱)—stand as enduring artifacts of Japan’s storied tea trade. Each container is constructed from lightweight, kiln-dried Japanese cedar (sugi) or paulownia (kiri), woods selected specifically for their natural resistance to humidity, insect damage, and lack of strong aromatic resins that could taint the delicate aroma of cured tea leaves. Applied across their paper-backed fronts, bold calligraphic characters brushed in dense black sumi ink announce their origin and contents: the large central character cha (茶, tea) flanked above by the characters for Uji (宇治)—Kyoto’s premier tea-producing region.

Historically essential for transporting and storing loose-leaf green teas like sencha and gyokuro, the chabako represents a masterclass in vernacular material engineering. To shield the harvested leaves from oxidation, light, and seasonal dampness, the interior of a traditional tea chest is lined with thin galvanized sheet metal, while exterior joins were sealed with tough mulberry washi paper coated in fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). Overlapping, deep-skirted lids (kabuse-buta) created an airtight seal, turning each box into a self-contained vault capable of preserving fresh harvests across long journeys along river routes and post roads to tea merchants (chashō) across Edo-period and Meiji-era Japan.

Aesthetically, this assemblage exemplifies the core principles of Mingei (folk craft), where pure functional utility yields an unstudied, timeless beauty. The darkened amber patina of the aged cedar, the worn and fraying paper labels, and the softened edges carved by decades of manual labor embody the essence of wabi-sabi—the profound appreciation for impermanence, organic wear, and humble utility.
