This symposium will bring together scholars, educators, game designers, and digital humanities practitioners from around the world to explore the potential games and gaming have to enhance teaching and research in the Japanese humanities. Approaching games not simply as entertainment, but as pedagogical tools and cultural systems through which knowledge is reconstructed and disseminated, we believe games and cultures of play can be productively incorporated into teaching about literature, history, religion, politics, aesthetics, and cultural memory. In connection with ongoing efforts to develop publicly accessible teaching resources on Japan and games, we invite proposals for presentations related to game-based pedagogy in three categories: Japanese game studies, gamification of Japanese studies classrooms, and Japan-focused educational game and/or interactive media development.

https://japanpastandpresent.org/jp/news/announcement-open-forums-on-japanese-library-resources

An advertisement with the Japan Past & Present logo at the top labeled "Open Forums on Japanese Library Resources." The text reads: Japan Past & Present (JPP) is pleased to announce that its Library Services Team will host a virtual open forum for librarians and information specialists who work with Japanese resources. In order to facilitate participation by specialists in disparate time zones, the open forum will comprise two sessions: one on August 3/4, 2026 and a second on August 5/6, 2026. https://japanpastandpresent.org/en/news/announcement-open-forums-on-japanese-library-resources

In recent years, information science specialists—those trained as Japan Studies professionals, as well as those who support faculty and students in the field—have struggled with resource availability, shifting institutional commitments and expectations, training opportunities, and more. In March 2026, the JPP Library Services Team put out a survey focused on needs and challenges pertaining to Japanese Studies resources; the two open forums will begin with a report and discussion of the results of that survey, followed by a listening session intended to give the Library Services Team a better understanding of the needs and challenges of librarians and library staff around the world.  The two sessions of this open forum will serve as a valuable opportunity to share information about the shared challenges of information specialists in Japan Studies, or Area Studies more broadly. At the same time, they will also inform the planning of an in-person academic symposium and workshop, to be held at UCLA in early 2027, in support of Japan-related librarianship in its many forms. As part of its mission to provide equitable access to scholarly tools and materials, and to help realize an increasingly diverse and inclusive future for the Japanese humanities, JPP is keen to learn more about the needs of Japanese Studies librarians, information specialists, and library staff who engage with Japanes…

japanpastandpresent.org/jp/funding/j...
A screenshot of the Project Funding application page on Japan Past & Present's website.

We are pleased to announce that Japan Past & Present is now accepting proposals for its Fall 2026 Project Funding cycle! 🎉🗾 We offer short-term support to scholars to create public-facing resources on Japan-related topics to be published on JPP's site. japanpastandpresent.org/en/funding/j...
A screenshot of the Project Funding application page on Japan Past & Present's website. It reads: The Yanai Initiative’s JPP Project Funding program offers short-term support to scholars to create public-facing resources on Japan-related topics (broadly defined) to be published on the JPP website. Resources may include, but are not limited to, research and pedagogy guides, databases, video series, essays, lesson plans/syllabi, annotated translations, digital resources, or other innovative materials in support of open-access research and teaching.

Funding of up to $10,000 may be used to cover the cost of research, writing, and content development by a group of 3-5 individuals for a period of 4 months, along with other mutually agreed-upon expenses. Team members will typically be expected to dedicate approximately 3-4 hours a week during their 4-month term. For reference, work on JPP-initiated projects is compensated at a rate of $30 an hour. We recognize that institutional policies and differences in prevailing wages in different localities around the world, as well as exchange rates, may affect the amounts that teams budget. In the case of larger projects, teams may, after showing appropriate progress, apply for a 4-month extension. If more than 5 people are desired on a Project Team, applicants must provide proof of complementary funding from an outside source. The number of projects accepted each application cycle may vary.

JPP is pleased to invite paper proposals for a symposium hosted by its Premodern Japan Collaborative: "Rural Medieval: Tabihikitsuke & Sixteenth-century Japan," to be conducted bilingually in Japanese and English at UCLA on October 2–3, 2026. japanpastandpresent.org/en/news/call...
A black and white graphic advertising a JPP symposium. The JPP logo is at the top, followed by "Call for Symposium Presenters: Rural Medieval: Tabihikitsuke & Sixteenth-century Japan. Japan Past & Present (JPP) is pleased to invite paper proposals for a symposium hosted by its Premodern Japan Collaborative: "Rural Medieval: Tabihikitsuke and Sixteenth-century Japan," to be conducted bilingually in Japanese and English at UCLA on October 2–3, 2026.

This symposium will bring together scholars and educators from around the world to present research and pedagogy materials related to the late medieval diary of Kujō Masamoto 九条政基 (1445–1516), known as Masamoto kō tabihikitsuke 政基公旅引付 (or simply, Tabihikitsuke). Tabihikitsuke documents Masamoto's activities managing his family's estate in Izumi Province from the years 1501–1504, offering an intimate portrayal of rural society; political interactions with regional power-holders; and the cultural, spiritual, and social norms of the time.

In preparation for the forthcoming digital publication of a transcription and translation of the diary in collaboration with Lee Butler (author of Four Years in Izumi: Village Japan in the Early Sixteenth Century) on the JPP website, we invite proposals for presentations pertaining to Tabihikitsuke and its world. Potential topics might include sociopolitical relationships in and beyond Izumi Province; rural communities; poetics, literary references, or other elements of the diary's content; local incarnations of performance, spirituality, and cultural practices; the materiality of the manuscript; or Tabihikitsuke's textual history and reception. Presentations may be research-oriented or teaching-oriented (e.g., pedagogical materials developed for using Tabihikitsuke in classroom settings)."

japanpastandpresent.org/jp/funding/j...

We are pleased to announce that Japan Past & Present is now accepting proposals for its Spring 2026 Project Funding cycle! 🎉🗾 We offer short-term support to scholars to create public-facing resources on Japan-related topics to be published on JPP's site. japanpastandpresent.org/en/funding/j...
A screenshot of the Project Funding application page on Japan Past & Present's website. The Introduction area of the text says: "The Yanai Initiative’s JPP Project Funding program offers short-term support to scholars to create public-facing resources on Japan-related topics (broadly defined) to be published on the JPP website.

The number of projects accepted each application cycle may vary." The Application Window text says Applications should be submitted by the designated Team Coordinator. All application materials must be submitted to admin@japanpastandpresent.org no later than:
