The proposed SSI rule change will drown intellectually disabled people under administrative burdens that they clearly will not be able to manage, and then condemn them to even deeper poverty for their condition. www.propublica.org/article/trum...
If enacted, the change will require intellectually disabled young people like Burton as well as very elderly people to file extensive monthly reports if they want to continue their benefits even at the reduced level. They’ll have to provide details about the property where they live: whether it’s leased or owned, as well as the names of anyone in the home, and whether any of these people has any new income or assets. They’ll also have to include documentation of all household bills and expenses, showing how much they do or don’t contribute personally, as well as financial documents such as bank statements and any pay stubs.

Burton will likely have to make an appointment and report in person at a Social Security field office any time her father’s hours or wages change even slightly; any time she and he switch up how they split utility bills; and any time an adult sibling spends even a few nights at the house and helps her with living expenses. If she doesn’t, she could later receive bills accusing her of having been overpaid by Social Security.

Food policing poor families isn't a win for nutrition--it's a loss for dignity and joy. As Brea Perry and I find in our research (see reply), low-income parents buy food treats for their kids because they want their kids to feel happy and normal--and they can't afford to do so in bigger ways.

Did you know? The US has one of the highest child poverty rates of OECD countries. The average child poverty rate across OECD countries is 12.2% In the US, it’s over 20% It’s partly why many children rely on SNAP High rates of child poverty warrant a national conversation.
OECD Child poverty rate by country

“On average across OECD countries, 12.2% of children live in relative income poverty (Chart CO2.2.A),
but rates differ considerably from country to country. In six OECD countries (Chile, Costa Rica, Israel, Spain,
Türkiye and the United States), more than 20% of children live in relative poverty; rates are particularly high,
at around 30%, in Costa Rica. In 17 other OECD countries (Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia,
Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovenia and
Sweden), however, less than 10% of children live in relative income poverty. In Denmark and Finland, the
child relative income poverty rate is only around 4%.”

SNAP isn't about "people who don't work." It's about people who don't get paid enough to live. Of the 40 or so million people who rely on food stamps: * Two-thirds are children, seniors, or disabled * Most working-age adults who receive SNAP are employed—but in jobs that pay poverty wages
