📣 Multiple Flatiron Research Fellow (FRF) postdoc positions are available in my @flatironinstitute.org group! We've never been better positioned to understand how high-dimensional nonlinear dynamical systems (neural circuits!) compute. If this is as exciting to you as it is to me, consider applying:

To all collaborators inside and outside academia: faculty at Cambridge *do not have money or resources* I know it's hard to believe and it's not a complaint just a fact. We get a few k startup (enough for a computer) and our salary is equivalent to a US postdoc. No institutional money for research.

Students sometimes ask me if it still makes sense, in this accelerating age, to pursue a PhD in AI. Perhaps counterintuitively, I think it's a great time to do so. I wrote up some thoughts on this here: web.mit.edu/phillipi/www...

Clara Hornung: nucleus basalis stimulation broadens single-neuron tuning yet improves working memory. How come? We find an explanation: at the population level it widens the angle between target and distractor coding directions in dlPFC. Better separation doesn't imply stronger code poster #341

I started researching ML before I built a synth, but you can get a great intuitive understanding of interaction within a generative system by building a modular analog synthesizer and watching how your components interact, and seeing what surprises emerge and what stays predictable as you scale up.

Happy to have this finally out! TL;DR: The evolution of beliefs over time can be formulated as a dynamical system, and OFC neural activity appears to implement this system with its own dynamics. These emerge without explicit supervision—when animals learn to predict value in simple Pavlovian tasks

We are trying (search Choose France 2026), but it could be much easier. There are tens of new PI positions in France every year, but most applicants are French or people already based in France. One of the reasons for this is the labyrinth one has to go through to get a permanent position. 6/
