FYI, this is happening because WSF is refusing to even give engineers a cost of living adjustment in their next contract. The salary they mention here just happens to be the highest out of six. Also, it's illegal to not give them sick leave. It's not a flex!
A Facebook post from Washington State Ferries:

This morning, 23 engine room employees called in sick. Every employee qualified to fill those positions has declined to fill them and keep the ferries running. All of the employees calling in sick, and declining to fill those vacancies, are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) who represent engine room employees. The ferries cannot run without these roles being filled. As a result, 13 of our 18 ferries are not in service. We understand how disruptive this is to thousands of Washingtonians. We expect our employees to return to work as soon as possible.
The employees who work in the engine room play a vital role in providing WSF’s safe service, which is why Staff Chief Engineers have a base salary of $157,000, and can make more than $350,000 a year with overtime, as well as annual sick and vacation leave, and retirement accrual.
All WSF vessels are fully staffed at the beginning of every service day at U.S. Coast Guard required levels. When an employee calls in sick, request dispatchers work to fill the position as quickly as possible. When those positions aren’t filled, the boat cannot sail, which is what we’re experiencing today across 13 of the 18 vessels currently in service.

Glad that’s over!

Mr. Lattimore's advice to cut and run in Korea."' The historian Mary McAuliffe is right to say, "One of the major ironies of the period was the unexpected role which liberals played, first in constructing a new liberalism which rejected the American left, and then in accepting some of the basic assumptions and tactics of the Red Scare itself."
In the atmosphere of McCarthyism, the British author Godfrey Hodgson wrote, "Liberals were almost always more concerned about distinguishing themselves from the Left than about distinguishing themselves from conservatives." Thus they joined "the citadel of ...a conservative liberalism." If the fear of being investigated had shown the intellectuals "the stick" in the early 1950s, "the hope of being consulted had shown them the carrot" thereafter.
Being an influential client meant accepting the confines of one's pa-tronage."' But in 1950, it was the stick that counted, and a mighty one it was.

You think you're protected because you go as big as you can on racism, you spend years harassing the movement's perceived enemies, you even disavow your own sexuality. They'll still throw you in a cage over the tiniest disagreement already forgotten.

A man with shaggy blonde hair is standing in front of a mirror, wearing a green Sub Pop t-shirt. Wrapped around his shoulders is a large tuxedo cat, whose legs are dangling off the man's left side and whose face is poking out over his right shoulder. The poet and artist William Blake, who knew Wordsworth's work, was struck by Wordsworth's boldness in centring his poetry on the human mind. In response to Wordsworth's poetic programme that, "when we look / Into our Minds, into the Mind of Man– / My haunt, and the main region of my song" (The Excursion), William Blake wrote to his friend Henry Crabb Robinson that the passage "caused him a bowel complaint which nearly killed him"

A disabled hikers group I follow posted this and it helps make the point. A reason Jimothy has caught on is b/c despite being quite "different," J still seems integrated into the local racoon society, independently capable, and accommodated when the need arises.
An image taken from the Disabled Hikers group on Facebook. There is a diagonal rainbow of red, yellow, white, blue, and green stripes with a grey border and the Disabled Hikers icon in the lower left. At the center is a small, very round raccoon with no neck and little tail. The raccoon is sitting in the grass next to a tree and is on its hind legs, somewhat facing the camera. The photo is captioned "Disability Icon of the Year."

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.
