FYI, this is happening because WSF is refusing to even give engineers a cost of living adjustment in their next contract. The salary they mention here just happens to be the highest out of six. Also, it's illegal to not give them sick leave. It's not a flex!
A Facebook post from Washington State Ferries:

This morning, 23 engine room employees called in sick. Every employee qualified to fill those positions has declined to fill them and keep the ferries running. All of the employees calling in sick, and declining to fill those vacancies, are represented by the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) who represent engine room employees. The ferries cannot run without these roles being filled. As a result, 13 of our 18 ferries are not in service. We understand how disruptive this is to thousands of Washingtonians. We expect our employees to return to work as soon as possible.
The employees who work in the engine room play a vital role in providing WSF’s safe service, which is why Staff Chief Engineers have a base salary of $157,000, and can make more than $350,000 a year with overtime, as well as annual sick and vacation leave, and retirement accrual.
All WSF vessels are fully staffed at the beginning of every service day at U.S. Coast Guard required levels. When an employee calls in sick, request dispatchers work to fill the position as quickly as possible. When those positions aren’t filled, the boat cannot sail, which is what we’re experiencing today across 13 of the 18 vessels currently in service.

Wait 'til you learn about numbers! Fun things like formal numbers for legal documents and counting, where you have distinct grouping systems like "twelve pencil-shaped things" or "thirty things-that-have-engines-but-aren't-cars," all of which totally change the words involved!

It's definitely a flawed system. I don't know if it's better or worse that so many of them that resemble each other are both different vowel sounds AND different consonants (the exception being ru and ro, which are load bearing 🙃)

When you learn how to write them by hand, there's a little tail on either end of the mouth and one appears on the left side, the other on the right. But as presented here? Deeply fucked up.

Glad that’s over!

Mr. Lattimore's advice to cut and run in Korea."' The historian Mary McAuliffe is right to say, "One of the major ironies of the period was the unexpected role which liberals played, first in constructing a new liberalism which rejected the American left, and then in accepting some of the basic assumptions and tactics of the Red Scare itself."
In the atmosphere of McCarthyism, the British author Godfrey Hodgson wrote, "Liberals were almost always more concerned about distinguishing themselves from the Left than about distinguishing themselves from conservatives." Thus they joined "the citadel of ...a conservative liberalism." If the fear of being investigated had shown the intellectuals "the stick" in the early 1950s, "the hope of being consulted had shown them the carrot" thereafter.
Being an influential client meant accepting the confines of one's pa-tronage."' But in 1950, it was the stick that counted, and a mighty one it was.

The Milo stuff is the perfect picture of fascism. You think you're protected because you go as big as you can on racism, you spend years harassing the movement's perceived enemies, you even disavow your own sexuality. They'll still throw you in a cage over the tiniest disagreement already forgotten.

In a world being constantly made worse by people with more money than God that refuse to do anything with it other than further enrich themselves we just lost someone that only wanted to use her wealth and influence to improve the lives of people that came from nothing just like she did. I’m a mess.
