Just attended a fantastic talk on aircraft accident investigation. Came away with three story ideas. It pays authors to be exposed to ideas outside of their comfort zones - even if the speaker did use a Hookland rule: “Don’t anger the ancient gods.”

Want to know what happened next / before / sideways? Of many possibilities, I recommend Peri and the Piscon Paradox – an evil future self, a wet fish, an even wetter fish, and very funny indeed… Up until the last thing she shouts; one of the most horrifying punches in the whole of Doctor Who.
Nicola Bryant performs Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles 5.07 – Peri and the Piscon Paradox by Nev Fountain, with Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor
The cover features an older Peri, the Fifth and Sixth Doctors and the terrifying Piscon warlord Zarl – a very big fish indeed!

Thinking I may pick up the gothic WIP I abandoned 14K words in last year. (I'd watched del Toro's Frankenstein and almost threw the whole thing out because I felt that it was running over a lot of the same ground, but I think the parallels are a LOT less strong than they felt at the time.)

Discworld QOTD, from Going Postal
Moist had worked hard at his profession and considered himself pretty good at it, but if he had been wearing his hat, he would have taken it off right now. He was in the presence of a master. He could feel it in the hand, see it in that one commanding eye. Were things otherwise, he would have humbly begged to be taken on as an apprentice, scrub the man’s floors, cook his food, just to sit at the feet of greatness and learn how to do the three-card trick using whole banks. If Moist was any judge, any judge at all, the man in front of him was the biggest fraud he’d ever met. And he advertised it. That was . . . style. The pirate curls, the eyepatch, even the damn parrot. Twelve and a half percent, for heaven’s sake, didn’t anyone spot that? He told them what he was, and they laughed and loved him for it. It was breathtaking. If Moist von Lipwig had been a career killer, it would have been like meeting a man who’d devised a way to destroy civilizations.

I'm fascinated by the generations that pass between the paragraphs of history. For example, Mesolithic foraging cultures coexisted in an uneasy balance with early Neolithic farmers, retreating beyond a buffer of a day's travel. From arm's length they traded, intermarried, and raided for generations.

Yeah this is why there’s been a huge move to Kickstarter again, I believe . Things are getting tougher for creator owned books at the moment — especially if you’re not a “name” — unless there’s a crazy unique or amazing hook (Beneath the Trees, e.g.) Zac’s thread here is pretty spot on, sadly.

I've had multiple instances as well of publishers pitching me a short logline/unfinished idea, and looking to me to re-pitch it to them fleshed out, while they maintain the rights for having the idea in the first place. So what looks creator-owned is really WFH. Wonder if that'll become a new norm.

Despite record sales across the industry the state of the creator-owned market seems dire right now. Multiple publishers are scaling back their line, a few don't seem to know what they want, others have pretty much shifted focused to entirely licensed books. It's weird!
