Sour Cherry by @nassos.bsky.social. Library borrow last yr; took all I had not to mark up page upon page. Got my own copy but had to catch my breath, back away before re-engaging. Started my revisit 3 days ago. This book will strip the soft bark off every fairy tale in your heart. 🖤 Link next post
The paperback lays open to pages 126 and 127 atop a green cutting mat. A small plain pad of paper is on top, with pencil scribbles: "names/lack of names, Eunice=joyful victory, Eunice merge w/narrator p133, throat/mouth/stomach, cherries-sour cherries-cherry tree" and more. In the background, on the page, a character named Halt sits near a character named Tristan on a beach.

My 3rd Nebula review is @nassos.bsky.social’s dark debut novel. A retelling of the story of Bluebeard, this is a labyrinthine, complicated work. Its difficulty, no doubt, is intentional, meant to mirror the vagaries of trauma & abuse. Powerful & complex, but not for the faint of heart. #booksky

Officially official because the press release has gone out. I was on the judging panel for the past year's IAFA Crawford Award for First Fantasy Book. The winner & honour list have been announced; congratulations to a hugely deserving winner in @seraph76.bsky.social's collection, Call & Response!
The IAFA is pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s Crawford Award is:

Christopher Caldwell for Call and Response from Neon Hemlock Press

Judges’ comment: Christopher Caldwell’s Call and Response is a powerful collection of queer joy and rage in lyrical, beautiful prose. These stories use the fantastic to reveal things about the real world and to movingly embody significant themes. The collection and organization of the stories is also superb; in mirroring themes and characters from the center outwards they are cast in relief in a way that strengthens both. A stunning first fantasy book.

Next, @nassos.bsky.social's Sour Cherry. Hugely impressive in overall effect, but if I was to pick out one thing specifically, I did not read a book last year, debut or otherwise, better written on a sentence level. Just absurdly good prose.
Natalia Theodoridou - Sour Cherry (Tin House)

Judges’ comment: Sour Cherry is an exciting and poignantly-written take on the age-old tale of Bluebeard. I love the ways that Theodoridou plays with both fairytale structure and the gendered implications of the tale. A captivating read!
