Virtually all of the 175,000 public comments on a 2022 FDA proposal to ban menthol cigarettes were form letters, most echoing tobacco industry talking points.

Scientist here: It is widely known inside science that this—top-down imposition of a research agenda—leads to mostly rote, boring, non-innovative work. Building an institute to do discovery science is hard: you hire young people, put them together, hope synergies arise and ideas fall out.

People need to understand that the NZ health system isn’t just being crashed, it’s being Americanised. That’s the endgame here. Insurance and capital-led, public services in squalor and subservient to private provision. Profit extraction at every possible point of exchange across the whole system.

Interesting article. Tobacco companies will resist any significant advertising constraints, but are still smiling if they can keep selling their products and find new approaches to marketing. As recent events in Australia have shown, gambling industry approach is much the same.

I wanna hear what the Lorax has to say about datacenters please

alishakwon84:
I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.
And frankly, you've got them all down on their knees.
You flattened the forests, you paved every glen, To build giant boxes for silicon men.
They whir and they blink with a mechanical hum, While rivers grow thirsty and creeks come undone.
So build with more wisdom, more sunshine, less smoke.
The planet's not here for one infinite joke.
I am the Lorax. My message won't bend-You can't upload Earth if it comes to an end.
