We've released the results of our candidate transit policy survey! We asked all mayoral & city council candidates about their commitments to improving transit. Of the three leading mayoral candidates, only Olivia Chow completed our survey; Chris Alexander made a platform commitment to hike fares.
(graphic) Mayoral Transit Scorecard: Transit promises made by the top three polling mayoral candiddates based on their transit policy survey responses.

Candidates: Olivia Chow, Brad Bradford, and Chris Alexander.

Categories of questions: Autonomy and Funding, Affordability, Service and Reliability, Accessibility, Safety

Olivia Chow answered all questions, Brad Bradford and Chris Alexander both did not answer any questions. A commitment to hike fares, not lower the fare cap, and not expand the Fair Pass discount was made by Chris Alexander, so he is given a failing score for his affordability

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

As you fill out the Toronto Star Vote Compass, please remember that there are many ways to pay for transit that isn’t reliant on fare increases. Presenting this as a binary between better service and higher fares is disrespectful to transit advocates who work tirelessly to push for alternatives.

“Here we have what looks like a bunch of political losers turning to AI to appear popular online. That’s the state of politics these days.” Brad Bradford, who stands for whatever he thinks will win him an election, is using it. No surprise. @rorywh.bsky.social w/great investigative work. #ToPoli
The task was named “Pushing Back on ‘Part of the Problem’ Attacks,” a reference to comments criticizing Bradford for inaction during his eight years on council.

One critic had replied to Bradford's post: “Haven't you been part of the municipal government for awhile, bradbrad? You're part of the problem lol.”

To push back, LogiVote's AI system had recommended seeding a counter-narrative.

The result, generated for us to post: “So tired of hearing the same excuses from city hall, while nothing changes. Brad, you’ve actually stood up for us — don’t let them say you haven’t tried. We need someone who won’t back down.”

The Victory App asked us to enter our X username to verify we complied and award us 25 in-app coins.

According to McKelvey, this allows campaigns to stay at arm's length from the posting itself, while maintaining control. “They want to show that you're doing the act independently so as not to violate [platform rules], but then they automate the monitoring of it,” he explained.

Meanwhile, I managed to snap this photo earlier that same evening. Desktop wallpaper worthy.
A photo of sunset over the Toronto skyline, viewed across Lake Ontario from Ward's Island. The sun sits low behind the CN Tower, its light breaking through streaky clouds and casting a golden reflection across the rippled water. Silhouettes of downtown high-rises stretch across the horizon. In the foreground, three paddleboarders and kayakers glide across the calm lake, and a rocky breakwater with a weathered makeshift wooden bench over the water at the bottom of the frame.

Ward's Island Fire Parade 2026 is in the bag. There was a definite theme this year! Can you tell what it was? 😂
Dusk street scene from the parade part of the event. In the foreground, a person wears a large head costume caricaturing a balding, smiling man who resembles Doug Ford in a black suit and blue tie, holding a large paper airplane prop around his waist. Behind them looms a much larger puppet of a woman with long blue-streaked hair and a green robe, representing Mother Nature, towering over the crowd. Additional costumed parade participants, including figures in pale masks and robes, line the sidewalk. A streetlight glows above the tree-lined residential street, with houses visible in the background under a fading blue sky.Night scene at the bonfire part of the event. Two paper-and-wood jet airplane effigies are mounted on a wooden pyre that is actively burning, with flames and sparks shooting up into the dark sky. In the foreground, a glowing heart-shaped lantern reads "NATURE LOVES YOU" with an illustrated image of the Earth in the center. A golden bird puppet with outstretched wings floats above the scene on the left. Spectators stand in the background watching.

Just sent this email to Councillor Moise, for anyone who may be looking for some inspiration:
A screenshot of an email to Councillor Moise that reads:

"Hello Councillor Moise,

First off, thank you for your hard work helping to make the ongoing Church Street Pedestrianization Pilot a success, and for leading the way in asking the city to develop a policy to make it easier to host more of these in the future. I am a big proponent of people-oriented places where folks can freely enjoy themselves with plenty of space and access to shops and amenities without having to worry about vehicle traffic. The more (and more often), the better!

Relevantly, City Council agenda item MM43.40 recently came to my attention. As a resident of Corktown, a neighborhood which has and continues to see a lot of positive change with regards to new housing and amenities, I'm confused as to why any part of our neighborhood needs to be a Heritage Conservation District, and I don't see what we have to gain from that official designation. We have great access to transit and lots of demand for more housing, so I'm concerned about starting any process that may ultimately make it more difficult to meet that housing demand. I know from my volunteer work over the years in both transit and housing advocacy across many different cities that removing barriers to reconstruction and new construction is very important to ensuring a neighborhood like Corktown continues to morph and change with the times; it's a necessary part of any healthy neighborhood if the priority is to fill it with a diverse group of people across the socioeconomic spectrum. Please help me understand why you believe starting this process to designate some or all of Corktown as a Heritage Conservation District will help further these goals.

Thank you again for your work and in advance for your response to my inquiry.

Regards,
James Pizzurro"
