Big thanks to @graphicmatt.com and all the organizations who maintain the data he used to produce these very informative visualizations for fact checking budget claims made on the Toronto mayoral campaign trail. City Hall Watcher arguably pays its annual subscription cost back with every issue.

Meanwhile, I managed to snap this photo earlier that same evening. Desktop wallpaper worthy.
A photo of sunset over the Toronto skyline, viewed across Lake Ontario from Ward's Island. The sun sits low behind the CN Tower, its light breaking through streaky clouds and casting a golden reflection across the rippled water. Silhouettes of downtown high-rises stretch across the horizon. In the foreground, three paddleboarders and kayakers glide across the calm lake, and a rocky breakwater with a weathered makeshift wooden bench over the water at the bottom of the frame.

Ward's Island Fire Parade 2026 is in the bag. There was a definite theme this year! Can you tell what it was? 😂
Dusk street scene from the parade part of the event. In the foreground, a person wears a large head costume caricaturing a balding, smiling man who resembles Doug Ford in a black suit and blue tie, holding a large paper airplane prop around his waist. Behind them looms a much larger puppet of a woman with long blue-streaked hair and a green robe, representing Mother Nature, towering over the crowd. Additional costumed parade participants, including figures in pale masks and robes, line the sidewalk. A streetlight glows above the tree-lined residential street, with houses visible in the background under a fading blue sky.Night scene at the bonfire part of the event. Two paper-and-wood jet airplane effigies are mounted on a wooden pyre that is actively burning, with flames and sparks shooting up into the dark sky. In the foreground, a glowing heart-shaped lantern reads "NATURE LOVES YOU" with an illustrated image of the Earth in the center. A golden bird puppet with outstretched wings floats above the scene on the left. Spectators stand in the background watching.

Just sent this email to Councillor Moise, for anyone who may be looking for some inspiration:
A screenshot of an email to Councillor Moise that reads:

"Hello Councillor Moise,

First off, thank you for your hard work helping to make the ongoing Church Street Pedestrianization Pilot a success, and for leading the way in asking the city to develop a policy to make it easier to host more of these in the future. I am a big proponent of people-oriented places where folks can freely enjoy themselves with plenty of space and access to shops and amenities without having to worry about vehicle traffic. The more (and more often), the better!

Relevantly, City Council agenda item MM43.40 recently came to my attention. As a resident of Corktown, a neighborhood which has and continues to see a lot of positive change with regards to new housing and amenities, I'm confused as to why any part of our neighborhood needs to be a Heritage Conservation District, and I don't see what we have to gain from that official designation. We have great access to transit and lots of demand for more housing, so I'm concerned about starting any process that may ultimately make it more difficult to meet that housing demand. I know from my volunteer work over the years in both transit and housing advocacy across many different cities that removing barriers to reconstruction and new construction is very important to ensuring a neighborhood like Corktown continues to morph and change with the times; it's a necessary part of any healthy neighborhood if the priority is to fill it with a diverse group of people across the socioeconomic spectrum. Please help me understand why you believe starting this process to designate some or all of Corktown as a Heritage Conservation District will help further these goals.

Thank you again for your work and in advance for your response to my inquiry.

Regards,
James Pizzurro"

Apropos of nothing, credit where it's due to the CAA's Gas Prices page, which lists "Public transportation and alternative transportation" above "Ride-sharing and carpooling" and "Consider going electric or hybrid" as answers in its "How can I save on gasoline?" section: www.caa.ca/gas-prices/
A screenshot of CAA's Gas Prices page on their website titled "Public transportation and alternative transportation" that reads: "Do you really need to grab your car keys every time you go out? Have you thought about other means of transportation (biking, walking, etc.) or public transit? If offered by your employer, working from home is another solution that can considerably reduce your gas bill. Planning and combining your shopping and errands can help reduce your time on the road and avoid rush hour periods. Congestion is costly—in time, patience, and fuel costs."

It's officially been a year since my spouse and I moved to Toronto. It's honestly difficult to put into words how happy we are here, and how much we're looking forward to enjoying another lovely spring and summer here. This is a special place. Thank you to everyone who makes that possible. ❤️
A photo of the Downtown Toronto city skyline as observed from Riverdale Park East on May 10, 2025. It's a sweeping view from a grassy hilltop on a bright spring day, looking out over a vast green park where small groups of people relax and picnic on the lawn. A winding red running track curves through the field below, flanked by trees just beginning to fill in with fresh green leaves. In the distance, a dense city skyline rises against a clear blue sky dotted with wispy clouds, its towers and high-rises creating a striking contrast with the open parkland in the foreground. A rustic wooden splay fence runs along the slope in the middle ground, and a sandy oval depression from a baseball field sits to the right of the frame.

And here's a link to CMTA's entire report card, which grades Baltimore on much more than just transit reliability, but also by various economic and environmental factors as well as the quantity and quality of transportation choices in the region: cmtalliance.org/report-card/
A screenshot from CMTA's webpage about their latest report card for the Central Maryland region: "...we need to reset our priorities: fully fund transit’s repair needs; run buses more frequently - implement the Bmore Bus plan now; build walkable places near transit; build high-capacity rapid transit - build the Red Line; maintain roads and highways but don’t widen them--reduce the share of transportation spending that goes to new road and highway capacity"

So, how's Baltimore transit performing compared to its peer MSAs? The answer: last in headway adherence, second-to-last in schedule adherence, and middle of the pack in data integrity. You can download our full report to CMTA here: cmtalliance.org/download/ari...

A screenshot of the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page titled 'Paradox of tolerance' that reads: "The paradox of tolerance is a philosophical concept suggesting that if a society extends tolerance to those who are intolerant, it risks enabling the eventual dominance of intolerance, thereby undermining the very principle of tolerance. This paradox was articulated by philosopher Karl Popper in The Open Society and Its Enemies (1945), where he argued that a truly tolerant society must retain the right to deny tolerance to those who promote intolerance. Popper posited that if intolerant ideologies are allowed unchecked expression, they could exploit open society values to erode or destroy tolerance itself through authoritarian or oppressive practices."

towson being towson
From a recent email from the Towson Manor Village Community Association: "Finally, there is an upcoming hearing regarding the zoning use permit for 1204 Stevenson Lane. This would grant Calvert Hall College of Baltimore the right to purchase this single family home and convert it to a boarding house for their President and members of clergy. After calling a vote, our Board has written a formal letter sent to the Office of Administrative Hearings stating that we are against this permit. We support the preservation of single family residential zoning (especially one zoned for some of our best schools). We have concerns over the precedent this would set if higher education institutions are able to purchase and rezone homes in our community."

The best way for my councillor @chrismoise.ca to discourage folks riding a bike or scooter from doing so on our sidewalks is to do more to install an expansive and well-connected bike network throughout our ward and beyond. These decals, like blocking replies and quote posts, are not a good look.

chatgpt did a great job sketching out how I should be using forearm straps to move a large piece of furniture this morning 🧐
A simple black-and-white line drawing shows two people using forearm lifting straps to carry a tall kitchen island down a staircase. One person is positioned at the top of the stairs, the other at the bottom. The kitchen island is upright, with cabinet doors and an open shelf visible. The straps are hanging loosely from each person such that they aren't actually being used at all, and so the two people are effectively just carrying the furniture without any help from the forearm straps they're wearing. 🙃

it is absolutely ridiculous to tell riders of your transit system to carry a flashlight and wear reflective clothing while they wait for their bus to show up. train your drivers better, make sure stops are well lit, and ensure service is frequent and reliable after dark. that's it.
The image is a screenshot of a Facebook post from the Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation. The post advises passengers to stay safe while waiting for the Baltimore County Loop bus as daylight hours shorten. It suggests carrying a flashlight, wearing bright or reflective clothing, and standing in well-lit areas. Next time you see the MTA talking about how "on time" its buses and trains are here in Baltimore, please keep in mind the way the transit agency calculates on-time performance is probably not how you assume it's calculated.
For buses:
1. Cancelled trips do not count towards MTA’s on-time performance metric.
2. If a bus is running but its departure from a stop isn’t trackable for whatever reason, it doesn’t count towards MTA’s on-time performance metric.
3. If a bus is not “on time” relative to a bus stop that is not considered a “major stop”, it doesn’t count towards MTA’s on-time performance metric. For light rail and subway:
1. Cancelled trips do not count towards MTA’s on-time performance metric.
2. As long as a train departs its first station within 10 minutes of its scheduled departure time, the MTA considers the entire trip “on time”.

On the left, what people actually want: more transportation options. On the right, how our state and local governments are actually spending their money on transportation.
In the poll voters indicated a preference for balanced spending between preservation (repairs) and capacity (e.g. widening highways, building new light rail, building new sidewalks), and between highways, transit, and pedestrian/bicycling infrastructure.State and local government leaders in Maryland tend to vote for budgets like this 2024–27 Transportation Improvement Program for the greater Baltimore region that had nearly $1 billion for widening highways and $0 for expanding transit.

Real-Time Prediction Accuracy is a good one and is something I believe MBTA pioneered that WMATA and others have since adopted some version of. Again though, I worry the MTA may be crediting themselves for scheduled trips that didn't operate here, and that seems misleading to a riding audience.
