@seattleparksandrec.bsky.social how much longer will Powell Barnett bathrooms be closed? This is getting ridiculous. I can't imagine a park in a wealthier part of town leaving bathrooms closed this long. Also the qr code is asking me to login.

This would also hopefully encourage delivery providers to park a truck at a central location and walk or bike to areas, instead of driving their giant trucks through & stopping every block.

In an actual implementation, there should be eyes on the ground to see where it makes sense. Input from the bus & garbage, but NOT from the civilian drivers. All of these are the bollard config that allows bike (incl cargo bikes) through.

Rebuilt my map for bollards to get it off Twitter: Every residential area should have bollards placed like this. All houses can still be driven to, but it prevents thru-routing & drivers "skipping" main intersections. Push all traffic to the thoroughfares. I've done the areas I'm familiar with.

oh yeah it doesn't even suggest it! And in Open Street Map, it's indicated that it's "private access" www.openstreetmap.org#map=19/47.61... So all that work has already been done. There's no reason for these drivers to be confused, other than "i used to could, and don't like change."

I emailed the council, and Joy replied, said they're looking into it. Sounds like they may not have been aware, like this was being done pretty quietly.

I'm all for adding the pedestrian signal for Route 2 to move back. but it being closed to cars has been working fine for the last few months. If conversations were restarted, that should have been a new period of public comments, not privileged convos. That's the part that's squirrelly!

The "drivers from Madrona & Eastside are confused" sounds like "SDOT needs to work with Google & Apple to update their maps faster". Not "tear out applied work that makes the city better."

When I wrote for Law & Order, we fake-murdered more people on all three shows than were actually murdered in NYC that year. And that was just three shows on one network. Murder mysteries make good stories. But they’re just stories. You’re safer than you think.

And the human nature to overweight personal anecdote vs statistical rigor. "my neighbor got taxed out of her home" will override any stats about total housing rates and median costs.

“Advocates” say? Or the data SHOWS? If it’s the data, just say that. Like, physicists don’t SAY the earth is round. Physicists just share the data SHOWING the earth is round. Enough of this “one side says” stuff if one side has the actual data.

A study of over 7 million people from 2000-2019 across 37 countries found a significant impact of cash transfers on all-cause mortality. Women's deaths fell by 20%. Deaths of kids under age 5 fell by 8%. The greater the amount and universality, the greater the impact. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Car bloat imposes myriad costs that fall on society instead of the vehicle owner (dirty air, dangerous streets, etc). It's a classic example of a market failure. The economist's response: Make owners of giant cars pay for the harms they inflict on everybody else. slate.com/business/202...

My top mobility policy of 2024: Higher parking fees for huge cars Paris is tripling parking costs for oversized cars. Montreal, Lyon, & Cologne are taking similar steps. Giant cars worsen pollution and safety, and they use more curb space. Owners should pay extra. www.nytimes.com/2024/02/05/w...
