Seattle just became the first city to pass a ban on surveillance pricing by grocery stores. The City Council passed a proposal stopping large grocery stores and online grocery retailers from using race, gender, browsing history, employment, or AI software to change prices from consumer to consumer.

Answer: Because they think they can. But REI Union and REI members are fighting to stop this corporate slide and bring the co-op back to its roots.
A picture of two people standing on a side walk with clipboards and a sign reading "Stop the union busting: BOYCOTT REI CO-OP". Below is the logo for the Cascadia Journal and then the head-and-by-line, "Why is REI acting more like a corporation than a co-op?"Faced with several years of profit losses, the co-op has started to act like a typical profit-hungry corporation. It has engaged in union-busting and discouraged employees – known affectionately as "green vests" – from joining unions. In response, unionized REI workers teamed up with 70,000 co-op members fed up with REI's corporate behavior who pledged to boycott REI during its biggest sale of the year in mid-May.“I’m proud to have stood alongside REI workers during this year’s Anniversary Sale and not shop,” said Margo Polley, a co-op member in Seattle. “I was shocked to hear about the treatment of workers. REI is supposed to be the good guys."

Boycotting REI is not a decision @reiunion came to lightly, but the company's actions have left us no other choice. Not shopping during the largest sale of the year will have a dramatic impact, and, as employees of REI, we have a vested interest in seeing it prosper.

REI has strayed dramatically from its roots. For the last four years, the "co-op" has run an intense union-busting campaign using the same anti-union law firm that Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Trump use to fight against workers' rights.

Stop the price gouging in grocery stores. Tell your State Representative to support HB 2481 today!
A picture of a grocery cart in the produce department at a store. A pair of hands ties a knot in the top of a bag of onions. Below is text reading "Seattle Times WA law makers consider bill to end retail surveillance, surge pricing By Shauna Sowersby January 22, 2026"If you’ve never heard of surveillance pricing or surge pricing, you are not alone. But both practices have crept into retail operations, leading lawmakers in Washington state to take action this legislative session. House Bill 2481, sponsored by Rep. Mary Fosse, D-Everett, and a host of other House Democrats, aims to rein them in. Surge pricing refers to retailers changing the price of a product based on demand. Surveillance pricing, on the other hand, involves companies collecting consumer data to build individual profiles and using AI to set personalized prices depending on the consumer. Imagine you’re at the grocery store with a friend. You buy the same item, but companies have collected data about you and your shopping habits, so you end up paying more than your friend. The difference may not be huge, but it is noticeable, and it can add up.

A picture of a meat department self-serve shelves. Below is the text: Forbes How Grocery Clerks Are At The Center of the Food Affordability Crisis. By Errol Schweizer, Monday, November 24, 2025.Grocery clerks and cashiers are at the heart of the food affordability crisis. Many of their customers can’t afford enough good food or are trading down to lower quality or more processed items. And as essential workers, clerks and cashiers are typically paid far below living wages, especially as food inflation has outpaced real wage growth. Like their customers, essential grocery workers are making difficult choices to feed their families and communities, and many are hungry for the holidays.Cynthia Hernandez is Customer Service Clerk at Ralphs in South Los Angeles. “The emotional toll is visible and real. I have seen customers become visibly distressed and even break down in tears at the checkout when they realize they cannot afford the food they need.”

“When the SNAP benefits stopped, it was an immediate shock to my budget. As a single mother with three children, that assistance is a critical part of my ability to buy groceries each month,” Cynthia Hernandez explained. This isn’t just affecting individuals but entire families and communities. Cynthia is also supporting her 65-year-old mother, who is a SNAP recipient and also had her benefits cut. When Cynthia’s benefits were restored, they were stretched to cover two households.

A study of Kroger employees in 2022 revealed that over 75% faced food insecurity. While many employees have fought for and won wage gains, costs of living increases eclipsed their victories.

Below is the logo for The Stand and the head line 'Hospitals are for healing, not detention" After more than five months in detention, Kuya G had lost 40 pounds from malnutrition and extreme medical neglect. A lawful permanent U.S. resident for nearly 20 years, he had tried to get treatment inside the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. Instead, he suffered until his symptoms were so severe that he was finally sent to St. Joseph Medical Center. There, he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and a bone infection, requiring the amputation of part of his foot.Charlie King, a UFCW Local 3000 union representative, joined the rally to share hospital workers’ solidarity with Kuya G, and to call attention to the ways patients and healthcare workers are harmed by the presence at the hospital of armed guards working for ICE. UFCW Local 3000 represents medical techs at St. Joseph.

“Our members believe hospitals are for healing, not detention,” said King.“Kuya G is fighting for his life at St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Ker of Malaya Movement Tacoma, which helped plan the rally. “Kuya G has shared that he feels hopeless and in pain, both physically and emotionally. In moments like this, when the system tries to break his spirit, we must demand accountability on every level.”

Tanggol Migrante is asking supporters to sign their petition in support of Kuya G, and if able, to donate to his legal fund.

When paychecks arrived at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, Nurse Nicole Geffrey noticed something wasn’t right. She could tell that nurses at the top of the pay scale hadn’t received the longevity bonuses they had negotiated into the new contract earlier this year.
A picture of a nurse in her scrubs in front of a colorful mosaic mural. Below is text reading: “It’s important to know your contract and to make sure you’re being paid correctly,” Nicole said. “When we look out for each other, no one gets left behind.”

Store closures and food deserts. Suspended SNAP food security benefits. This crisis is not an accident. It’s the result of the rise of the billionaire class. When billionaires and politicians fail working people, our union steps up.
An old man dressed up in a late 1800s suit with a top hat. He is scowling and pointing his finger angerly. On his hat is the Fresh Food for All campaign with the word "all" crossed out with a red line. At the bottom center is the text, "Stop organizing in your workplaces and communities for fresh affordable food!"
