Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

Now we need to know if this ICE flight headed for Ghana has third-country nationals onboard. If so, it needs to bring them back. The emergency ruling is binding immediately, which includes planes in the air. Any lawyers or anyone else with standing think they might know someone onboard? File!

With all the September runs of dynamic ENSO models now in (with the exception of SINTEX), we are even more likely to see a record-setting (or even record-shattering) event this year. Most models revised their projection upward, a few downward, and a few unchanged:

Agreed. I increasingly see this kind of argument invoked to argue against interventions like air conditioning in places where extreme heat events are increasingly leading to mass mortality. We no longer get to choose between adaptation & mitigation--we have to do both at an accelerating pace.

The 2025 American Community Survey should have come out today. But it has been delayed because of unusual political encroachment at Census. ACS drives business and policy decisions, especially in local communities, and is the primary input to Census’s immigration estimates.

I just woke up & saw that Macklemore had released an excellent statement. Here's some of it; it's worth reading in its entirety on Instagram (h/t @mandykathryn.bsky.social, who reposted it. Mandy and Kathryn are real ones, & among my heart's minyan.) www.instagram.com/p/DdRdsy0m2H...
I'm not sure how to start this. So I'm going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour. But before I get into it, I was to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety, and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families. The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women, and children who have been killed, starved, displace, and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don't lose sight of that.[...] And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been weaponize the accusation antisemitism. Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying "Free Palestine" gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn't protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.[...] I hope this isn't the end of my relationship with Ed. Thirteen years of friendship doesn't disappear because of one painful disagreement. I hope we both continue listening, studying what is happening in Palestine and wrestling with what neutrality means in a moment like this. My door will always be open to continuing that conversation.

However, Neumann energetically insisted that monopoly capitalism undermined the general legal norm’s economic buttresses. For immanent economic reasons every modern capitalist legal order increasingly relied on discretionary, individualized modes of law.
