The more psych testing I do for people, the more I realize that every communication (verbal or non) is an expression of their internal experience, not what is objectively true.

No amount of therapy is going to fix things caused by failures in the greater social system. This, entirely:

“men who perceive the #tradwife movement favorably believe that they rely on women for intimacy and [also] resent that this is the case. This mentality could put tradwives in a precarious position considering the amount of control–both financial and otherwise–that they yield to their husbands.”

Therapists don’t give advice. I don’t know your life like you do and choices are more meaningful when they come from you. We can talk about options, but you should *run* from therapists who try to tell you what to do. It’s a subtle abuse of power.

A French way of telling someone to be quiet, especially popular in school playgrounds, is ferme ta boite à camembert. It means “shut your camembert box!” * I often use this phrase when someone is being so annoying that it gets to the point I simply camembert it

Seems like we maybe have a problem assessing what it means to be “smart” when our main proxy for measurement is academic achievement at the kinds of elite institutions that have given us such paragons of intelligence and good judgment judgment as Pete Hegseth or Jared Kushner or Bari Weiss

As someone who has worked with adjudicated folk, I can tell you that punishment and rehabilitation are so far from being that same thing. Do we want to reduce crimes or no? Because we have ways that work and we’re not using them

This is what I keep thinking about and relates to the posts I shared earlier about students - grappling with the material IS the learning, so if we’re outsourcing that, we’re not learning.

Reading books is so profound because it denies you the ability to speak when confronted with an idea. You must listen. It isn't a conversation. Sometimes it shouldn't be a conversation.
Sometimes we should just listen.

I thought we would be kinder to each other. I dunno why. I just thought we would. I thought we'd be so smart because we all had computers in our hands that would lead to understanding, which would lead to empathy and then action and reason. I'm an asshole I guess.

The absence of rituals becomes a major problem in times of upheaval. Rituals ground. They provide a base beat to a fluctuating top beat. Cultures that nurture rituals over time are (somewhat paradoxically) more capable of change. They can bend without breaking.

Worst thing American politicians figured out post Vietnam was how to have war without making our civilians feel it, other than in economic aftershocks that keep us desperately focused on getting by. There’s zero sense we are waging war in streets of NYC. They’ve turned war into a distant livestream.
