“Always remember that this is the hour of crisis: it is high time for you to wake out of sleep, for deliverance is nearer to us now than it was when first we believed. It is far on in the night; day is near.” – Romans 13:11–12 (REB)

I love theological ressourcement. But when a figure’s theology has done grave harm in the real world, the “reclaiming” has to begin by saying so explicitly, and then show why the retrieval is necessary at all, let alone beneficial.

Tove has helped me so much over this past month. She has taught me more about myself than I have learned on my own over many years. Her poetry, in particular, has devastated me, and in breaking me, has helped me to see the beauty in the fractures of our dreams and nostalgia.
Four books by Tove Ditlevsen: “The Copenhagen Trilogy,” “Vilhelm's Room,” “The Faces,” and “The Trouble with Happiness.”Cover of “There Lives a Young Girl in Me Who Will Not Die.”

I am so grateful to journalists who are still doing their jobs and still abiding by SPJ ethics. I am thankful that they are still writing and posting about the accelerating decline of the United States into authoritarianism and fascism. If it weren’t for their fighting spirit, I would have given up.

I affirm the Easter message as the true disclosure of the kerygma. This does not change the fact that, experientially, dogmatically, theologically, etc., etc., Good Friday is an infinitely more significant event.

“Children,” by Tove Ditlevsen, in “There Lives a Young Girl in Me Who Will Not Die”
Children
My heart loves all the most impossible children, those no one cares for and no one understands.
The liars, the thieves, the promise-breakers, the children all adults love to reprimand.
I care not for those flowerbed children who thrive in neat rows and are strangers to want and shame.
The children whom adults dotingly trim into shape and who can in good conscience call God by name.
The ones who know love best are those who never met it.
The sinner knows more of virtue than most would assume.
I loathe the pruning shears upstanding adults wield.
Wild bushes are where the rarest flowers bloom.

In the Incarnation, the God-man is not an accommodation of an otherwise “unknown” Son. God’s eternal act of self-determination to be God-for-us in Jesus Christ *constitutes* God as Trinity.

A few people have (surprisingly) sent me emails in response to my absurdly long post about “Reading Marks.” I am grateful for the feedback and honestly shocked that some of you even bothered to read it. The most common question I received was not actually about annotations, but about motivation!

The logic of incarceration runs so deep in American political culture that “justice” has become indistinguishable from confinement. To prevail over an opponent is to lock them away, in prose if not in prison. Perhaps we must side with Agamben: “I do not support any form of punishment.”

I don’t have any more patience for gay men who are part of the “inclusive orthodox” community. What gets me is the unvarnished ignorance of history and the deeply ironic commitment to a fundamentalism that can only arise from a very unique and historically contingent kind of privilege.

I want to meet Pam. I want to discuss Moltmann’s “The Crucified God” with her. I want to understand why she thinks the Crucified One, who so earnestly loves her, does not love her queer and immigrant neighbors.
“…arises when one asks what is the cause of the suffering of the God who suffers with imprisoned, persecuted and murdered Israel.
Does he merely suffer for human injustice and human wickedness? Does the Shekinah, which wanders with Israel through the dust of the streets and hangs on the gallows in Auschwitz, suffer in the God who holds the ends of the earth in his hand? In that case not only would suffering affect God's pathos exter-nally, so that it might be said that God himself suffers at the human history of injustice and force, but suffering would be the history in the midst of God himself. We are not concerned here to set up paradoxes, but to ask whether the experiences of the passion and the suffering of God lead into the inner mystery of God himself in which God himself confronts us.” – Moltmann, “The Crucified God”

The eternal Son’s self-emptying consists in God’s decision made in election. The Son eternally wills to receive a human life as his own and to live it in a mode of “ontological receptivity” (McCormack), taking on the limitations of that life, including its suffering and its death, as truly his.

Free Will™ used as a rhetorical cudgel to defend God from moral culpability is not only boring, but also itself morally reprehensible. To think that an infinite being could hold finite creatures that it created to account, with infinite consequences, is to create a totally unnecessary dilemma.

“Focus” is now a commodity while “attention” is spoken of in economic terms. I suspect that this kind of focus, that this kind of attention, is just channeled distraction. I suspect that real focus and real attention arise in affective ecologies where anxiety isn’t the dominant structuring mood.
