When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

One of the things that I think gets lost in the Talarico trans reversal is that he was already leading in the polls when he did it. He wasn't chasing votes; he just did that shit because he wanted to.

Take shamefully stolen from eugenics twink but it is funny how porn is often considered one of the major vices of the digital era but unlike infinite scrolling algorithmically curated content it has a very obvious end state where you get on with the rest of your life

I remain convinced that the most effective response to a politician or a pundit who's pushing transphobia is "I'm not sure why you're obsessed with other people's genitals but it's really creepy"

How did he pass is job interview? The same reason he's all over the press & everyone in the "left" is captured by these people. I'm gonna call it like it is, once again, its ******RACISM********* Y'all can't imagine that WE are the experts.
100GB+ frontier models aren’t 50KB virus you could pass around by emails. As if there are tons of H100 sitting idle with inference stack ready everywhere.

How did this guy pass the job interview at Anthropic as a “researcher”?

Quote tweeting a tweet that says:
Rohan Paul
@rohanpaul_ai
Jacob Coxon's next interview on CBS News (ex Anthropic+Open AI researcher who resigned)

"We can't just unplug it because it could be copying itself over to other computers. Like it's not that difficult to find yourself because an AI is just code. It could transfer itself over the internet to a different place and then you unplug it here, but it's actually still over there and maybe it makes 10,000 copies of itself and they're all cooperating."

One of the most important types of accounts you can follow is something I call "The Dipshit Barometer." If there is a fearmongering, apocalyptic take going around, check in on the dipshit barometer to see if they affirm it. If they do, you don't have to worry about it.

People who are fans of Cold Political Calculus seem awful upset when the calculations have any minus signs in them. "We need to cater to transphobes to get more votes overall." Okay, since you're so smart, you must have already calculated you'll lose fewer trans votes, so why are you complaining?

One thing I've always found odd about the 'did farming cause war?' debate is the degree to which it does not engage with the third major human subsistence pattern, pastoralism. For what it is worth, pastoralist societies historically were not farmers but did a ton of war. Just gobs of it.

This reliance on frequency is why people say AI is designed to foreclose the future. If people become so reliant on it that they cannot fact check it, then human thinking will become stuck in what has already been thought, rather than what might be discovered.

So..this photo is from 2024. They just ripped it from her Instagram. I’m not going to get into a trans person still repping Harry Potter from 2024. But they didn’t actively seek her out to promote this. They stole her 3 year old vacation photo and tried to make it seem recent. Vile.

An initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play
The Campaign to Force Genital Exams on Girl Athletes Soon Washington State could require sex-verification tests for those playing sports in schools.
Portrait of Andrea González-Ramírez
By Andrea González-Ramírez, a senior writer for The Cut who covers systems of power. Those physicals, Maria explains, are usually perfunctory: “Like, Are you walking normally? Are you lightheaded? I have never had to take any clothes off. I’ve never felt uncomfortable or violated.” If IL26-638 were to pass and Maria were still in school, she says she would likely drop out of her team. (We’re withholding Maria’s real name to protect her privacy.) “I honestly don’t know if I would be able to do these tests,” she adds. “It would also make me question, If I do it, are all my teammates going to too? Or would I just play with the three or four girls who are willing to or have access to do it?”
