Extremely frustrating that "AI" in common usage has come to mean LLMs, as someone who's been working professionally in AI since the 1990's

ICE builds more prisons because the goal is explicitly to warehouse surplus labor, criminalize poverty, and assert total control over all of society. When Stephen Miller claims there are 25, 30, or even 50 million "illegal immigrants" in the US, he's betting on how many of us he'll need to imprison

Again, I really wish people would actually read what Bender keeps saying about her 'stochastic parrot' paper that people keep willfully missing, which is that it's not a description of the models themselves, it's a description of how the process behind them generates data (in this case, text)

“It’s not thinking but it’s something more than parroting” Okay then what is it doing? Don't give me that 'we haven't decoded the black box' shit, what specifically do you think or even suspect that it's doing that's a legible, falsifiable middle ground between 'thinking' and 'parroting'?

The idea that AI is a new, conscious entity is a sick joke. It's a machine voice trained by sociopaths who hate people. It's as conscious as the the voice you get offering menu options while you scream "speak to a representative" into your phone.

How Trump’s homelessness crackdown became a sweeping retreat from disability rights

The administration’s abrupt turn against Olmstead appears to trace back to one of President Donald Trump’s central fixations since his return to office: aesthetics and cleanliness in the nation’s capital. It began after Trump complained about unsightly tent encampments along his motorcade route...

The fallout has already begun. Since issuing the memo, the Justice Department has abandoned or weakened at least five investigations, lawsuits or settlement agreements rooted in Olmstead. This goes well beyond the administration's stated goal of forcing homeless people into treatment.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

In terms of consequences, the changes would have two effects. First, they would eliminate existing demographic data that we use for things like estimating racial inequality. That is by design, of course. Second, it would make the Census less accurate by discouraging non-citizens from participating.

We need to take these moves seriously as a calculated effort aimed at shoring up their AI's claim to be undeniable and beyond criticism. What they've made is abhorrent in so many ways, but this post is right that only a few institutions have the reach to build widespread consensus about that.

I fear “tax the rich” is something you can maybe pass in a non meaningful way that ultimately doesn’t address economic injustice and will be repealed when the government goes (further) right again. It’s worth considering what is actually going to be long lasting and meaningful which means it can’t

At some point we should talk about how facile “tax the rich” is as a program, there’s no point in taxing billionaires harder if we leave the existing articulations of private property and profit motive in place. Especially when it’s so easily gamed thru the legislative process
