the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know

Best Humble Bundle or Best Humble Bundle ever? Gene Wolfe was one of speculative fiction's best writers, with The Book of the New Sun being a masterpiece, closely followed by The Book of the Short Sun, The Fifth Head of Cerberus, and others. Give him a shot for just $20 for most of his novels.

"Places other than the US [and sometimes Russia and China] have agency" continues to be something vanishingly few people either in the US or outside of it understand. This isn't how the Cold War worked, it's certainly not how things work now.

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

Now you all get its "alignment to whom" question. “Human values” becomes suspiciously similar to the values generated by a tiny Bay Area social network, filtered through Yudkowskian thought experiments, EA funding priorities and the commercial interests of frontier laboratories.

Yeah. Our communities shape our beliefs, and the internet has empowered us to shape our communities with incredible specificity. We can pick out the exact community that will validate our views, no matter how delusional. Many examples of this on the right, and more than a few on the left as well.

CC from my post there: the problem is deeper than trying to do too much with too little. Our fundamental theory about how military force is both generated and used is obsolete. The funding doesn’t matter; you can’t fund yourself out of an inaccurate assumption. The bill comes due anyway.

It should go without saying but if America genuinely adored innovation, we'd rekindle union power, enforce antitrust laws, provide endless financial and tactical advantage to small business innovators, and dismantle corruption. We would not, as it turns out, worship false idols and the abject hollowness of feckless men.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

I am quick at playing board games;
I have nine skills;
I forget runes slowly;
the book is a preoccupation with me and also craftsmanship.
I am able to glide on skis;
I shoot and I row so that it makes a difference;
