One of the reasons the wide range of white supremacist pieces of shit that this country produces hates cities is bc city residents prove that we can get closer to this goal without having to sacrifice cultural diversity to do so.

Big Tech took control of the ad infrastructure and money, the biggest social media platforms have been consistently tightening the noose on social referrals to news orgs for years and now AI is devastating search traffic. This is not going to be a survivable environment for lots of news publishers.

We also are seeing what fills the information vacuum when news organizations disappear: partisan propaganda sites funded by dark money and AI slop. If that's not the future you want you need to support your local trusted news outlets before they fold.

I don't think people really appreciate the gravity of what is happening in the news industry. If you value getting reliable information from the news orgs you depend on, you need to support them with your dollars or they could disappear. This isn't hyperbole. It's happening right now in real time.

I saw an interesting LinkedIn post (forgive me) from a local developer about MN's economy. The bulk of the post is below, but specifically I want to point out the highlighted portion. Read it carefully and you'll see what the author presents as a paradox is in fact the same question repeated.
A screenshot of a LinkedIn post about a business event that reads in part:

Wemimo Abbey built his billion-dollar company Esusu using his experience in Minnesota. He got turned away by dozens of banks for not having a credit score, and built Esusu on the idea that rent payments should count on your credit score. Carla Vernón shared not only how she built an AI stylist (and rocked it) but created The Honest Company's second headquarters in MN due to the talent, systems, and deep history with consumer products concentrated in the Twin Cities.

But then John Phelan gave us the numbers underneath: 63% of Minnesotans say their income is falling behind the cost of living. We're the fourth most expensive housing market among ten comparable Midwest metros. The top income tax rate kicks in lower than anywhere but Oregon.

Then this morning, Twin Cities Business reported on DEED’s most recent jobs report showing Minnesota outpacing the US average for job growth and creation over the year AND YET our labor force participation and unemployment remained higher than the average.

So here's the paradox: Are Abbey and Vernon and the DEED stories happening because Minnesota's fundamentals on talent and quality of life are strong enough that they overwhelm the higher cost structure and the tax picture? Or are they happening despite those things, and we're basically hoping that will hold in perpetuity?

Because if it's the first one, we can probably relax a little. If it's the second, then the time to get creative on the full stack —affordability, housing, talent, and taxes — is before the next guy with a billion-dollar idea looks at Minnesota and decides the costs have finally outrun the advantages. One thing was true—the CEOs from Fairview, Ecolab, HealthPartners and more still believe this is the place to be—and that we can have both a competitive business landscape and be an amazing place for families.

Bret: Millions of Americans, including me, not only hate the parties but also hate the party for which we typically vote. That means there's a market of the dissatisfied. I hear this all the time among my friends in New York City: They can't believe they're stuck with Zohran Mamdani as mayor, and they felt the same way about Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio before him. But when you ask them if they voted in the primaries, the usual answer is: Uh, no — we were on the Vineyard or in Greece. The point is that it's on them, or us, and the remedy is some civic
entrepreneurship, philanthropically funded, to change this.

My fairly well-informed feeling here is that all of this stuff takes so long that debating the proper order between land use, transit, ped/bike, etc is frankly an academic luxury. Cities that are serious about mode shift as climate mitigation (and QOL boost) need to pull all levers simultaneously.
