Again, you can always detect some faint embarrassment from Democrats when they talk about the ballroom, but “the president demolished a big part of the White House to build himself a palace with bribes from enemy powers” is, by an order of magnitude, the worst corruption scandal in US history

They put it in group chats, they document it, they take pictures, because they trust that other men in their in-group will protect them because they'd all be implicated. And a lot of other systems work this way too.

The Cornell Sun article is in many ways reminiscent of what I/others covered in frat archives leak articles I worked on at Swarthmore, especially the group chat image. Greek life teaches men that they can act with impunity as long as they see each other as "brothers," even after college.

The thing everyone is missing about Taylor Swift is that she wants to make movies and this is the key to understanding her career since 2020 if not earlier.

Online shopping eliminated these gatekeepers and disintermediated the market, allowing consumers to express their desires more directly. And it turns out that what people really want is cheap disposable goods, not more expensive but higher quality stuff that lasts a long time.

Consumers used to select their purchases from what was available at local stores, which were stocked with goods chosen by professional buyers looking for quality and value.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

No, DoorDash, you cannot “support the District’s right to self-govern” while telling Congress to gut the District’s right to self-govern. Those positions *are* mutually exclusive. Your lobbyists are absolutely blowing this.

Democracy means a society and system in which everyone’s rights matter. Rapists count on this being untrue – and Trump is proving them right

Rape is a crime against democracy in the most immediate sense of equality between individuals and the premise that we’re all endowed with certain inalienable rights. Most rapists operate on the premise that they can not only overpower the victim physically, but can do so socially and legally. They count on a system that discounts the voices of victims and only too often cooperates in silencing them, through shame, intimidation, threats, discrediting, the obscene legal instrument known as a nondisclosure agreement and a system too often run by men for men at the expense of women and children. That is to say, rapists count on getting away with it because of a system that hands them power and steals it from their victims. They count on a silencing system. On profound inequality.

Which is what makes rape such a peculiar crime: it is the ritual enactment of the perpetrator’s power and the victim’s powerlessness, buttressed by the circumstances that puts and keeps each of them in those roles. It’s driven by the desire to use sexuality to cause physical and psychic injury, to dominate, to celebrate the rapist’s power and the victim’s powerlessness, to treat another human being as a person without rights, including the right to set boundaries, to say no and to speak up afterward. A society that perpetuates and protects this desire and arrangement is rape culture, and it’s been our culture throughout most of its existence.

I REALLY hate the idea of opposing a D.C. mayoral candidate because Trump threatened to punish us if we elect her. It’s worse than obeying in advance; it’s doing the fascists’ work for them. It’s letting Trump trick you into sacrificing D.C.’s autonomy. You can’t defend home rule by surrendering it.

Obviously there won't be 60 votes to repeal Home Rule, but I don't think people are thinking creatively enough about the myriad ways the Administration could mess with the District in confrontations.

Pretending Lewis-George isn't a YIMBY because she questions the efficacy of intensive community policing, for instance, sends the message that YIMBY voters won't reward candidates for adopting the YIMBY platform. It's even worse to pretend her opponent is a YIMBY just to rationalize opposing her.

Perhaps this dilution of YIMBYism was inevitable given divergent views among YIMBYs on issues outside the heartland issues of urbanism. But I think it's really bad for the movement. It shifts focus off the big goals and diminishes candidates' incentive to vocally support the original YIMBY platform.

The YIMBY movement is about building more housing, boosting public transit, reducing reliance on cars, and promoting built urbanist projects where there's demand for them. Shoehorning stuff like "should we hire more cops" or "should we impose a youth curfew" into YIMBYism dilutes the actual cause.

Lewis-George may be better on upzoning and transit and other heartland YIMBY issues, these critics say, but she's bad on crime, policing, education, corporate taxes, and other issues that rile up D.C.'s centrists. They then paint these issues as part of YIMBYism. I really do not think they are.

A note about discourse around the DC mayoral race: I'm seeing a lot of self-described YIMBYs favor the NIMBY-aligned candidate (McDuffie) over the unabashed YIMBY (Lewis-George). They've justified this by shoving their pet issues under the YIMBY umbrella, making it a kind of centrist omnicause.
