Really the core mistake both moderate dems and republicans made this cycle was assuming the voters wanted what they voted for

The part that grinds on me about cultural criticism now, in the social media age, is how much criticism now contains the meta bit of “oh, but a lot of people I don’t like or am scared of liked it”. This is not a valid lane of media criticism, at least not on its own.

One thing that’s interesting about Mar-a-Lago is that it was built by a lady who was really into collecting art, furniture, and other antiques from pre-Revolution France

many states, including California, also have an option to drop your ballot off directly at a elections office dropbox or election center and avoid USPS on the way back all together, which I'd recommend if possible.

I love how a consistent feature of state and local government in this country is that states make it illegal for local governments to raise the revenue that they need to function from anything other than property taxes, and then get annoyed when voters are perpetually pissed about property taxes

short blog on the troubling question of why everyone has decided to be such a fucking mark these days awningfawning.xyz/trust-me-im-lying…
We live in a renewed age of charlatans (see above), and in an unprecedented age of information availability. Anyone in the entire world can use the internet to find peer-reviewed papers and non-peer-reviewed commentary on any topic scientists have ever talked about. (Anyone in the entire world can conflate the two, too.) Given this relative ease of access, it's unsurprising that online argumentation often includes requests for proof. Is there a study showing that American literacy has declined? Where are the articles talking about how food addiction is or isn't a real thing? What authoritative body decided writing by hand is cognitively different from typing on a computer? You get the gist. It's always good to substantiate your claims with appropriate references when arguing in an online forum, but what I've noticed about the past several years is that people have slowly stopped accepting argumentation bolstered with supporting evidence and started treating argumentation as a duel of references, "evidence" free of independent thought. This culminates most ridiculously in people retrieving arguments from ChatGPT or another LLM and using it in place of their own reasoning.Expertise matters, including the kind of expertise you get after a long stint doing a PhD or working on bleeding edge research for 20 years, but if someone asks you to turn your brain off and use theirs instead they should be required to justify it. What's happening at AI companies right now isn't anything like climate science or the development of the atom bomb. These people have a history of making claims that are later revealed to be wildly exaggerated or straight-up fabrication. In my day to day work, I'm a computer programmer; when I do performance tuning, I am always on the lookout for improvements that seem a little too good. Tweaking an algorithm and getting 200% faster code is great, but if it's 800% faster then I start double checking myself, because "too good to be true" is as real in computers as any other industry. This is just a normal, rational thing that most people who are decent at their jobs do—and yet, AI executives regularly announce that they've either achieved AGI or are extremely close to it, over and over, always surprised and disappointed when it turns out they missed something, yet seemingly never capable of learning from their past mistakes.

This my favourite comment re the recipe
This has been my go-to brownie recipe for 30 years, even after going to baking school! I agree that using the best cocoa possible makes a difference. These days, I use Callebaut. In the 80s, an acquaintence in Germany to whom I brought some of the brownies, and who considered herself a great cook, asked for the recipe but was never able to get it to work. She kept asking me what she was doing wrong and I was never able to solve her problem. Eventually, she moved to the US and stole my husband!

if centrists didn't want to be put in a situation where the democrats have to reform the electoral system and judiciary within the first two years of the next president's term, perhaps they should have done it when it wasn't an emergency. if we do not do it, we will die under worse than Jim Crow.

You fuckers made me do it. The Racist Academicals Patter Song.
[RACIST ACADEMICAL]
I am the very model of a racist academical,
With footnotes and citations to make bigotry seem credible,

I traffic in ideas that have long since been discredited,
Like human races being real and IQ is inherited!

I’ll sign an open letter that legitimates my bigotry,
My gender ideology is thuggery and piggery,

If criticized it’s academic freedom I will hide behind,
My high and mighty principles shan’t be questioned by your tiny mind!

[CHORUS OF CHUDS]
His high and mighty principles shan’t be questioned by your tiny mind!

We’re not in the habit of recognizing celebrity deaths here at 925. That said, Dolly Parton is a national treasure and some folks here joke that Dolly is our Locals patron saint. After all her song “9 to 5” is our anthem. Today we remember all the love and kindness Dolly brought the world.
Tribute-style portrait of a Dolly Parton performing in a ruffled light purple blouse, arm raised and singing into a microphone, overlaid with the lyric: "You're just a step on the bossman's ladder / But you've got dreams he'll never take away."
