Going through the A-Z database list that was run by the previous librarians at my school from about 2008-2015ish. It's depressing how many websites and webpages no longer exist. Even the ones hosted by universities.

Unfortunately, this piece on The Great Resegregation has aged well. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...
If the Great Resegregation proves successful, it will restore an America past where racial and ethnic minorities were the occasional token presence in an otherwise white-dominated landscape. It would repeal the gains of the civil-rights era in their entirety. What its advocates want is not a restoration of explicit Jim Crow segregation—that would shatter the illusion that their own achievements are based in a color-blind meritocracy. They want an arrangement that perpetuates racial inequality indefinitely while retaining some plausible deniability, a rigged system that maintains a mirage of equal opportunity while maintaining an unofficial racial hierarchy. Like elections in authoritarian countries where the autocrat is always reelected in a landslide, they want a system in which they never risk losing but can still pretend they won fairly.

In the wake of her passing and her recent celebration of life, @loscharlos.bsky.social shares how Alice Wong taught him the power of Disability Justice and how she wielded it to bridge the hesitancy between disability, Long Covid, and COVID-cautious communities. bit.ly/4mohc12
Alice Wong, an Asian-American woman in her early 50s, wears a black t-shirt that says “keep masks in health care”. She rocks a rich plum lipstick and cool multicolor sunglasses. She has a tracheostomy attached to a ventilator. The text reads, “The Sick Times. Alice Wong showed us Disability Justice makes our advocacy stronger. By Charlie McCone.”Alice showed me I can lead a meaningful life — and be cool doing it — while sitting with my pain and limitations. And while we, sick and disabled, channel our rage back at those trying to ignore and erase us.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

I recommend reading the ProPublica article about ICE's practice of detaining children. This little section plus some data I've been working with recently has me thinking about how accountability looks given immigration enforcement devolution. www.propublica.org/article/trum...
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd recently began calling for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who have committed no crimes and have strong community ties. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office wrote in the statement to ProPublica that deputies do not make any decisions on who to detain — they report suspects to ICE, and ICE makes the decision.

But she noted they now make an effort to determine citizenship status.

“Nothing has changed in how we deliver day-to-day law enforcement services in our community,” she wrote, “other than asking everyone with whom we interact their place of birth.”

I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.
