a little tiny microscopic dragon, rotifers passing by. I've spent a lot of time peering down a microscope in the last few years, enjoyed taking inspiration from the real tiny organisms to make one of my own.
Watercolour and pencil illustration of a microscopic dragon sitting on a plant root. It's body is transparent and it has two rounded wings covered in beating cilia hairs. It has a long neck and blunt snout with long whiskers. Inside its neck, large jaws are visible and it has tiny black eyes.

The dragon has large claws on its feet, like a water bear, and a long segmented tail hangs down and splitting into a fork at the end. From the root, golden diatoms are growing, and sun animalcules creep along it as a group of rotifers swims past.

This is Achrioptera manga, a giant phasmid or stick insect native to Madagascar. The specific epithet, "manga" means blue in Malagasy & it's not hard to see why. Only males are blue. The tiny back wings ("alae") are an example of brachyptery: they're useless for flight, but have other functions.

TIL: EB White wrote to Vladimir Nabokov for spider facts while writing Charlotte’s Web

There is a large grey spider that commonly inhabits out-buildings and sheds, and I turn to you on the chance that you know her and can enlighten me as to certain of her more intimate habits and functions—this because she figures

White encountered the spider at his farm in Hancock County, Maine in October 1950.
Unable to identify it himself, he asked his friend Vladimir Nabokov, the novelist and lepidopterist, for advice. Nabokov replied that he knew "nothing at all" about spiders, but suggested that White contact Willis J.

Extremely bad news if true (and unlikely this reporter would run with it if not). The MMWR has been the earliest warning bell for outbreaks since it announced the first US cases, in 1981, of what was later identified as AIDS. This will be a grievous shock to what remains of US public health.
