I told you it was a good news/bad news story. As an author, if you go Audible, they own the book outright. It’s like work for hire, a bit. But you are paid up front on pitch—not after you write a book maybe no one will buy. The effort on the front end is minimal: pitch, paid. Then you write. 5/

We are not encouraged to talk about sexual assault. We are told to go quietly, shamed into silence. What is happening to #JaneDoe: it isn’t about me. But it IS about US. So I’m talking. I was molested at 5. I was assaulted by my boss at 22. There have been near misses and escapes all along the way.

My books at Audible are in fact via Great Courses (who I’ve worked with for years). The latest is a forensic history and read by me… in case you need my dulcet notes: www.amazon.com/hz/audible/p...
amazon.com
Though murder is old, the science of forensics is quite young. In fact, most of what we consider forensic science has been around for less than 200 years. Long before we developed the ability to analyze fingerprints or test DNA, the victim’s body was often the evidence—thus early forensics is where medicine and crime solving intersect. That intersection began to appear in the 19th century, when doctors, surgeons, and scientists fine-tuned their understanding of disease, decay, and the actions of chemicals and poisons on the human body.

I am fit, healthy, confident, well-educated. I’m a former boxer with self defense training. I am constantly vigilant. I am always looking for threats and how to avoid. None of that is proof against rape, yet I am ‘to blame’ if it happens. And that is why all women have underlying anxiety, even PTSD.

I prefer writing books for print. I prefer reading books in print. I’m visual and not auditory. But I do not thumb my nose at audio—because hell, that’s how all stories began. Around fires, told in soft light… shared by bards and minstrels. If storytellers can’t be read, we may at least be heard. 10

You might listen to one while driving/shopping/working out. Audible knows this. And so they want books of a certain kind. Not heavy thinking, turn back to page 130, philosophy. They want high concept. What does THAT mean? God knows. But some hints I’ve worked out since: 7/

Now—readers, why Audible? Because it’s easy. Loads of folks have a monthly membership and do they get book credits. It’s invisible and easy and they click a button and have a book. You listen while doing other stuff. Our busy lives demand most of our attention; you might not pick up a book. But 6/

I want to repeat that bit: there is one market where, instead of reaching saturation, the demand outpaces supply of books/authors. I haven’t seen that in my lifetime anyplace. So, what does that mean? Good question, and I asked it. 1. Audible Originals want pitches 2. That belong only to Audible 4/

The better news: it isn’t that people aren’t hungry for new books, especially fiction. I met with an editor/acquisitions person at Audible, who used to work in traditional publishing. She told me that they almost can’t keep up with demand. That is readers want more audiobooks than they can supply 3/

According to my agent, the whole market is soft. Usually, it’s a bit easier to do Nonfic than Fic (smaller pond), but the nonfic market has dried up too. People aren’t buying books. Publishers aren’t taking risks. EXCEPT in one area. Audio. Now, the bad news first: that largely means Audible. But 2/

The way universities (and often high schools as well) treat their athletes as untouchable is so disgusting. It apparently applies to athletic staff too considering you had things like the Penn State sexual abuse and Bobby Knight literally choking players. Just because athletics makes them money.

Patriarchal culture uses rape as a tool of subjugation. It’s a threat that goes beyond bodily harm—I am in you, I own you, I can impregnate you and force you to carry a piece of me inside you. It’s the weapon of hatred and cowardice. It’s insidious. It’s everywhere. It’s in the Oval Office.

My mother was raped in college at a study group. A STUDY GROUP. I asked her what she did about it. She said there are things you just have to get over. Imagine. Imagine being told so often that men can own you, that you should just get over it. I had to grapple with that after my own assault.

I’ve had to learn many skills; not just avoidance but, more troubling, how to placate men and shift around them to avoid being victimized. The number of times I escaped harm by pretending and strategic maneuvering is tragic—but a bold no so often meant violence to follow. A silent epidemic of harm.

I want to add: woman meaning all self-identifying woman. But also: anyone can be assaulted, AFAB and AMAB. Rape culture is about power over another; it’s part of patriarchal control but it doesn’t just target one gender.
