The prevailing narrative is "Big Food created an obesogenic, unhealthful food environment! It's THEIR FAULT!" This is largely true. But we're the ones who fall for stupid fads, look for magic foods, demonize macros - so we get the products to match. We are not so much victims as co-conspirators.

Can’t eat a sandwich until you subscribe to sandwiches. Can’t eat today’s sandwich until it has applied daily sandwich updates. Sandwich now has adverts even though you paid for ad-free sandwich. Can pay again to have less sandwich adverts. Now you can eat the sandwich, but it’s smaller.

I’m a Texan trans kid who almost died because of Ken Paxton. The world should know what he’s done. This was very difficult for me to write, but given what's at stake, I cannot bear to stay silent about what I went through at Paxton's hands. He must not be rewarded for what he's done to trans kids.

This is a powerful story from a trans Texan (who's also quite a talented independent journalist). I've been arguing that trans people have the right to be upset with Talarico, and I think we do. This is the case for vote for him anyway, eloquently made, and by someone with the standing to make it.

Charlottesville folks, I went by Hello Goodbye Records today, which was new to me. It's ~50/50 CDs and vinyl—I picked up Dylan & Costello. Recommended. This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

Personally, I think what needs reckoning with is how fake it all was. Centrists convinced themselves annoying leftists on twitter were an equivalent threat to Jan 6 insurrectionists. They wildly inflated the threat of left-wing authoritarianism while ignoring how it was taking hold on the right.

Every year I try and write a note about what it was like at the car attack scene at the Unite The Right rally in 2017. It changes a little bit each time I do it. Last year I wrote about how it made me sad that the Trump administration is creating the opportunity for people to demonstrate heroism.
