For good reason, people focus on detached single family exclusionary zoning as being really bad. But it went hand in hand with pushing neighborhood scale commercial uses out of residential areas, creating car dependency, furthering segregation, and making vast swaths of development pretty crappy.

Just watched “The Hunt for Red October.” So good. I had forgotten that Alec Baldwin was the original Jack Ryan.

Absolutely no good reason for this, just like there’s no good reason to keep 4th St open to cars across Cville’s Downtown Mall

This episode is built around a paragon example of why there is no obligation to give publicity to both sides of every argument. Sometimes one side of an argument is so dangerous that people will die if they follow its advice!

It’s good Dillenbeck did this event, but I’m not sure what the value is of saying 15 people have been put on leave and then claiming staffing is nearly in a crisis situation. 15 out of 2800 employees isn’t a significant amount. Is there a larger number on leave? cvillerightnow.com/news/208802-...

At the hospital I routinely get to work with language interpreters. It feels like magic every time. I don’t speak a word of the patient’s language and yet we’re able to have effective communication thanks to the interpreters.

#WeekWithoutDriving starts tomorrow! If you’re a driver, we hope you’ll spend time this week trying to experience the Charlottesville area transportation system from the perspective of those who cannot drive. We want freedom of movement for everyone in Charlottesville.

I watched some of the Jack Smith hearing. The GOP is stuck so deep in an echo chamber completely detached from reality. A real “The Empire Has No Clothes” situation playing out in front of us.

Four years ago, Charlottesville paid $1.6 million for this parking lot as part of a parking supply panic after the courts parking agreement. It doesn’t get used much for parking. I’d love to see the city put affordable housing on this site so that we can actually make good use of this land.
Almost completely empty parking lot

I was reminded during a tense few minutes on a 6am run this morning that it is so stupid (and contrary to nature) that we don’t have 24 hour public restrooms on the Downtown Mall. Fortunately I was able to get into the Omni and use their bathroom. FFS, why do we collectively do this to ourselves?

Until ACPS gets a top to bottom review, every issue that comes up will take on a larger life of its own because people don’t trust the school division.

I’m not saying this is always the case, but locally I’ve found that the elected boards/council most enamored with consensus also tend to do less work before meetings. They basically just hand responsibility over to staff.

This article captures a dynamic I’ve seen in Charlottesville/Albemarle leaders who push hard for change: public attacks from the broader far-right and private alienation from local defenders of the status quo. I appreciate Allison speaking up, despite all she’s gone through. She’s one of the best.

I’m reading The Iliad and my big take away is don’t stand near a top warrior (Hector, Ajax, etc) in battle. A spear or arrow will be launched at them, a deity will alter its flight, and suddenly you’re stabbed through the jawbone. Happens a thousand times. Story should be called The Wingman (dead).

My daughter is currently holding a funeral for a stuffed animal fox. It’s a private affair - no parents allowed. But I suspect even so, the fox will continue to abide in our home in perpetuity.

Some data from the upcoming city Planning Commission confirming what we already knew: way too many people who work in Charlottesville do not live in Charlottesville. Albemarle County, the city of Charlottesville, and UVA have created a perfect storm of high housing costs and long commutes.
Regional Considerations
The following data and key takeaways were provided by Hamilton Lombard (Demographer):
• An increasing share of the Charlottesville region's workers live outside of Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville. Of the 352 U.S. urban areas with 100,000+ population, only the Boulder MSA has a higher % of daytime population change, which is from in-commuters;
Charlottesville MSA is second highest.
• The availability of relatively higher income jobs within the Charlottesville area (e.g. healthcare, finance, biotech) along with the relatively lower cost of housing in surrounding localities and regions, is one of the reasons for this trend. This is occurring along with workers who are unable to afford the cost of housing in the Charlottesville area and therefore live further away.
