So, hey, @spryfox.bsky.social's title, Spirit Crossing, sadly does in fact use GenAI. Dev's have confirmed as much in their Discord. There is a Claude file in the game files for the playtest that started a conversation about it, and sadly, that will be the end of it for me. I'm heartbroken...
Chedd Spry Fox — 2:57 AM
Hi folks, sorry, I've been AFK with family in town today and only just noticing this AI conversation now, right before I was planning to go to bed!
Our designers and engineers are using Claude to make their lives easier; for example, designers will use Claude to help them make a change they want to make by editing dozens of config files quickly instead of painstakingly editing each file by hand. We do not use any form of genAI in any way to create content in Spirit Crossing. All the art, music, etc, is 100% human created. And will continue to be.
I personally also frequently use AI to research various topics online.Chedd, Spry Fox — 3:17 AM
It is a complex and emotionally charged topic, for many very good reasons. I am grateful that many of you care about this. FWIW, when I spun Spry Fox out of Netflix, I chose to pay myself $20k/year and give the majority of the studio's equity to all the other employees because I care deeply about all the other employees. Our very limited usage of AI is the same: I have allowed it to the extent that it helps my studio's employees hopefully be able to maintain decent work life balance and not grind themselves into paste trying to make this big, complicated MMO with our limited indie studio resources.

Yuuuup! I was diagnosed when I was 42 and it literally changed my life. Like Nome, my depression went away. My diagnosis armed me with the knowledge of what was happening and along with a good therapist I was able to recognize and break the cycle of ADHD burnout. I am truly happy now.

So many personal websites are so overwhelmed by AI crawlers that they've had to implement mitigations specifically for that problem, often at significant cost. In return, they now receive fewer actual human visitors. What a shitty thing to do 🤬

If you believe this was just a "mistake": The PR that did all this changed "off" to "all" on TWO LINES, and was merged without testing/feedback in 4 hours. The "fix" was also 2 lines, after more than a week of backlash. There's quite literally no room to interpret this as a mistake.
A screenshot of the original PR's changes, showing changes from "off" to "all" in two places.A screenshot of a response from the approver (dimitrivMS):

Thank you all for your feedback, professional or otherwise.
Sorry about the regression. I will work on fixing this in 1.119.

There is a number of issues with the Co-Author functionality:
- It should never have been enabled when disableAIFeatures is on.
- It should not add attribution to changes that were not done by AI.
- We need to make sure it receives a more test coverage before change the default.

If you have additional (constructive) feedback, please ping me directly or open an issue.

Microsoft losing the plot to the extent that games running on Linux through a compatibility layer are now not only faster but *assumed to be faster* than games running natively on Windows should be an even bigger story than it already is
For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months.

Today's spreadsheet crime: One of my #gamedesign students was using Excel to estimate how good different starting locations are on a Catan board, and showed me a cool trick for plotting hex tiles in a chart, so I just had to try making my own version. 🤓
Spreadsheet simulating the board game Catan.

There's a chart showing a randomized board as it appears in game, with tile art by Mark Mocarski. A blue disc is drawn at each vertex, scaled according to how attractive that settlement site would be.

Surrounding the chart are the various tables of values used to generate it.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.
