This 2022 piece by Jeremy Peters In the New York Times was hilarious bullshit when it was published but now that Musk is literally bankrolling the entire Republican Party it’s a fucking laugh riot.
Critics Say Musk Has Revealed Himself as a Conservative. It’s Not So Simple.

If Susie Wiles is forced out or marginalized, Trump will truly have no one in any position to counsel against an extremely stupid and desperate attempt to overthrow Congress (again). The fact that Hegseth and Miller are still in power is a leading indicator of what happens next.

Do you know how many times I thought about if or when the US and/or a billionaire owner might try to do some sort of disruption at scale? The blocking of ICJ judges’ Microsoft accounts but for a much larger ”enemy“ faction? It would be bad but also it would be suicide for any US service company.

I’ve kept thinking back to Carney‘s NYT interview in September where Starlink was such an obvious national security risk for him, and Ukraine was a stated reason. “Starlink, we will diversify away from, no question.”

Many in various NatSec and foreign policy circles have spent the last 2 years—last decade, really—telling themselves the Putin sympathy is a show, a negotiating tactic, or a conspiracy theory. Or that Trump is purely transactional, so make him a better offer. Nope. Ideological affinity. It's real.

from a real-world standpoint it's obvious untenable and unacceptable and incredibly obscenely immoral -- but also from a theoretical pov, from a Weberian pov, what the fuck is the US government if this one guy, who is not elected and not in the gov't, is making these kinds of decisions?

SORRY. I have to clarify again: please still go out and vote for James Talarico. Phone bank for him. Please ensure that Ken Paxton loses that general election. However, critique of his lack of enthusiasm and support for M4A is still warranted. It should be critiqued. I'm sorry.

I'm speaking from experience as a canadian who is living in the province of ontario. My province is currently run by a conservative who wants to privatize our healthcare, but even he knows that if he touches that and completely privatizes shit, he would lose his job as Premier. Universal healthcare/socialized healthcare, specifically being able to see a doctor without going into medical debt, is embedded into the fabric of Canadian life and into the fabric of all OECD nations except the United States. It should not be fence-sat on.

Sam Moyn, who I should stress has been wrong about absolutely everything related to authoritarianism for the last 10 years, reshares Ross Douthat:

"As Trumpism has flailed and failed, it hasn't consolidated the kind of authoritarian power anticipated by its most alarmed opponents. It doesn't justify making anti-populism the
measure of all things."

I have not seen the new version. But one brilliant thing about the original was that it made the audience culpable. Carrie is just weird and off enough so that you can’t smugly say, “Oh, but I would have been nice to her.” Instead you say, “I should have been, but WOULD I have been?”

You cannot possibly look at Sissy Spacek’s performance in Carrie and not be wowed by the ways in which that movie gets you to care about her, to root for her, and to imagine against all reason that it might work out for her. If you don’t get that, you have simply lost the plot.
