Yeah, Phillips is one of the worst monsters in music history, which is saying something. Thankfully for my mental health his evil stuff happened long after his relevance to music, so I didn't have to tell the story and could just say "there's some horrible shit. You don't want to know."

Palantir’s Tom Watson hasn’t missed an opportunity to fearmonger about “highly organised pressure groups” affecting public interest procurement. We’d say firms like Peter Mandelson’s Global Counsel, who lobbied the government on Palantir’s behalf, are a bigger risk 👀 bit.ly/3VALODg

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC
BBC screengrab from within their Russell Brand trial coverage. Image of Brand in 70s-style aviator glasses, with earpods in, blank expression. Long dark wavy hair, black and grey beard, dark unbuttoned shirt. All on a fire red/orange and black background
BBC logo top and centre, underneath a subdeck reading: Fame Under Fire. Then the headline 'Russell Brand On Trial'.
The words 'fire'and 'trial' are coloured to look like they are glowing orange at the bottom

personally i think it's really great that the shop owner defended himself from the charge of being weirdly hostile and condescending to someone asking whether an item with a price tag is for sale by being weirdly hostile, condescending and evasive to a reporter asking whether the item is for sale

And, as @fitzparticle.bsky.social points out, this seems to run foul of one of UKRI's guiding principles - the Haldane Principle - that the people closest to research, and not the government, make decisions over what is funded.

For almost a year we have been told about the UK government's record investment in science with large amounts set aside for fundamental, PI-led research. It's been extremely difficult to square this with the cuts UKRI have chosen to make to Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Nuclear research.

This morning a crucial piece of the puzzle has been revealed - at a crucial meeting at the end of 2025 UKRI undertook the targeted defunding of fundamental research in order to redirect investment to government priorities. Suddenly a lot of the decisions over the last year begin to make sense.

If the best-paid people believe their job is to repeat what they’re told then move on to Match Of The Day coverage, and anyone saying Wait, What Is Going On Here? is greeted with hostility… that will perpetuate itself.
