The pear by Jane Kenyon

There is a moment in middle age
when you grow bored, angered
by your middling mind, afraid.

That day the sun
burns hot and bright,
making you more desolate.

It happens subtly, as when a pear
spoils from the inside out,
and you may not be aware
until things have gone too far.

Thinking about "plus they'll probably have to deal with Godzilla at some point".
"Tried to watch 'Shin Godzilla" on the plane only to realize by the end of the movie that it actually a drama movie called 'Tears for you'. Words can't describe the feeling of watching an incredibly sad movie while constantly thinking: 'Damn... This is depressing. Plus, they'll probably have to deal with Godzilla at some point too...'"

What follows are four screencaps (presumably from "Tears for You"), showing a smiling woman (subtitled "I really love you."), a distant image from above of axwonsn in a white dress (subtitled"Thank you... for raising me."), a short-haired person weeping, and finally, an apprehensive woman (subtitled "living happily.")

Here’s the whole thing.
Question
BY MAY SWENSON

Body my house
my horse my hound
what will I do
when you are fallen

Where will I sleep
How will I ride
What will I hunt

Where can I go
without my mount
all eager and quick
How will I know
in thicket ahead
is danger or treasure
when Body my good
bright dog is dead

How will it be
to lie in the sky
without roof or door
and wind for an eye

With cloud for shift
how will I hide?

RIP Rachel Blau DuPlessis, poet & critic extraordinaire. from one of her poems, & from an essay of hers on George Oppen—
samaras
green
sleeves
make a moon round rainy trees.
If more seeds fall
will I learn the nature of rain?
Gather the borders snug, pupal,
eat the teachers,
all under the bosky grids of time and place and under wreathe my boughs. Here the concept of humanity is constructed by addition: one person adds himself to another, like a set of stones or bricks in a wall. This way, people can be builders. The blood from the stone is one proof that humankind can give (say, their lives during a war) to make life blossom, despite the fact that old mother Nature, who appears in the final section, is a useless "stone dead dam." People can shape their lives — it is a high responsibility, but evidently not one that is beyond us. We can choose to live with a humanist ethic, where other people are "brothers" in part because they too have been deserted by a faith and by a system of belief, and because somehow we construct a new faith on the commonality of that loss. In another important poem from The Materials ("Return"), certain seeds of hope are presented, among them a woman, Petra, whose name, perhaps accidentally (perhaps not), means stone - a woman who awakens a whole community to a social and political struggle and is therefore one of the builders of the "wall," Oppen's image for a human community.

Then reviewers will ding us for using technical language, footnotes, and laborious explanations in prose. I fought for endnotes. it finally took me making the case on the basis of race and gender — a black woman can’t not cite her work, I explained. Made it sound like a legal threat.

“My boss killed a lamb for me. Or did I kill a lamb for the boss? So long ago, these risks to bloom in the waste of creation. Decades in which one’s title was contingent.” “Bildungsroman” by Kathleen Winter, new poetry out today at OKD: okaydonkeymag.com/2026/08/28/b...
The background is an open field for cattle grazing at dusk, dotted with bushes/small trees and round bales of hay. The foreground, the bottom half of the image, has high-contrast, pink-tinted mountains, and a bolt of pink filled with blue-purple horizontally across the top of the mountains. Also at the top is two pink-tinted lambs running left, chasing Sad Jack. The lamb leading the charge is holding a butcher knife. Sad Jack has a blue-bleeding gash on his neck and a splatter of blue blood around him.

my other contribution to today's discourse: if you’re curious about the view described in the opening of that article in the Atlantic about leaving academia, here are some pictures of it from a video i took a month later during george floyd protests when a car tried to get around police barricades
a picture of people on a bridge with waterfalls and a mill in the background. someone holds a child, another person pushes a stroller. people wear masks and and hold signs. attention is somewhere to the righta view to the right of the previous picture, showing an edge of waterfall and more mill buildings. the masked crowd hold lowered signs and look down the street. a single police car with lights on is visible and no other cars can be seen in the roadwaya view of a bridge covered in masked people holding signs and looking toward a mostly emptry street in the distance. a police car is still visible

Poem for the @neonpajamas.bsky.social Sunday prompt, which was to write an ekphrastic poem about a random costume design from google image search. Here's the poem, then the costume.
I'M READY TO MARRY, MY CUNT IS THE SUN

Gold drips down my legs when I think about my husband,
who is laid down in tall grass, dick up like a maypole.

I kiss at the air, thinking about pearls.
Wow, pearls! I'm very into pearls.

On the ground, people scurry and get into cars.
The cars are so funny. I make them crash with my mind.

Light pours onto the earth: I'm wetter than the ocean,
whom I look at with love, and pee into for days.

My husband wakes up: it's time to get married.
He's jealous of the ocean, and eats an albatross.

I get mad and start yelling
about how he doesn't respect seabirds.

I leave him at the altar,
make a tsunami with my mind.

I say 'I need space,' and I go into space
where I admire, for a time, the horsehead nebula.

A woman wearing some kind of cream-colored rubber suit with a cream-colored woven spiky mantle that looks like a shell, it has a hood. The suit has gold lines, and the crotch looks like a sun that stretches down the inside of her legs. It has a white tulle train like a wedding dress.

I am serious, if you are Canadian and read one piece on immigration today, it should be this. My heart breaks for those suddenly thrown into panic—this isn't public health. (Switched to mobile for easier-on-mobile screenshots.) www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
An untold number of Ugandans, Congolese and South Sudanese nationals who were already in Canada when the federal government brought in Ebola virus-related travel restrictions for residents of those three countries have had their visas suspended, CBC News has learned.

The move does not kick them out of Canada, but it effectively bars them from international travel because they would be unable to return without a visa.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says it could suspend more than 24,000 travel documents as it seeks to keep residents of the three African countries out for a 90-day period it announced Tuesday, alongside quarantine requirements for Canadians and permanent residents returning from any of them. These measures mark the first time IRCC is using mass visa-cancellation powers granted under Bill C-12, which passed at the end of March.

The official said the department is "satisfied with the outcome," but admitted it's "something that needs to be tweaked."

"We'll be looking at lessons learned and best practices if and when we need to use this again."

I lied, because “it is a stereotype that gender critical people are nasty bastards” is actually written into this code and sorry you can’t legislate to make people like you
4.100
Examples of stereotypes in relation to religion or belief are that persons who hold or manifest certain gender-critical beliefs necessarily have negative attitudes towards trans people, or that persons who hold or manifest the belief that same-sex sexual activity is sinful necessarily have negative attitudes

wards gay people. The judgment explains that: it may be that some persons who hold / manifest such beliefs have such animus, but it is stereotyping to assume that all do '32
