It reminds me more of how American car manufacturers in the 1960s and early 1970s obsessed over ornate but useless features like tailfins or massive torque even as German and Japanese corporations focused on affordability and everyday usability

Why? Because the combination of Putin in the Kremlin and Trump in the White House means that the world we have relied on since the 1940s is gone. Our ”normal” is over. It takes me zero pleasure to say this. I have always thought of myself as an Atlanticist. I don’t want this.

If every middle or potential great power in the current US alliance system decides it has to fall back entirely on its own military and economic resources to develop strategic hedging options that bypass Washington then it is pretty much a post-American global order

This isn't just a problem for Europeans, lack of US reliability is also a huge issus for Saudi Arabia, UAE, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and at this rate even Israel. If the US is no longer able to coordinate a global network of alliances it loses its exceptional position in the global system

The Eritrean regime is the kind of authoritarian dictatorship that doesn't give a damn about the welfare of its citizens. As long as it has access to Riyadh and Cairo it will ignore demands from London. And when London needs something from Asmara, this goes out the window anyway
