Thinking about doing a PhD in political science? We are looking for people interested in studying politics in the Baltic Sea Region (the Nordic countries, the Baltics, Poland, etc.). Projects may come from a range of subfields, including gender & politics, legislative studies, and party politics.

(eg clarity of responsibility & representing actual popular majorities). So it is not clear that such a well-designed RD actually exists (semi-parliamentarism might be among the better candidates). I think this is important to understand our problems - and insufficiently addressed in the book. 2/2

I don't think that CHE model is necessarily the best to achieve issue-specific majorities. Has its downsides. Semi-parliamentarism might be better (i.e. two directly elected chambers, 1st majoritarian w no-confidence vote, 2nd PR with veto power but w/o no-confidence) global.oup.com/academic/pro...

Image showing the abstract of the paper "Self-Fulfilling Prophecies at the Voting Booth" by Werner Krause and Christina Gahn, published in the Journal of Politics. The abstract describes a quasi-experimental study across 25 countries finding that parties polling just below electoral thresholds are approximately 45 percentage points less likely to clear them, and that this effect diminishes when voters are informed about polling uncertainty.

My beef is with open lists, and more generally with how enamoured we are of "personalisation" of electoral rules, in view of limited evidence that it actually makes a difference, other than making the act of voting more cumbersome to voters (possibly compounding participation inequalities).
