In the wake of the recent state elections in Germany, there's a lot of debate about what's driving the strong AfD results — migration, distrust in institutions, the east-west divide. One economic explanation stays IMO underexplored, even though the AfD itself pushes it aggressively: energy prices. 🧵

Environmental economics isn't usually seen at the forefront of just transition debates. In a new paper in #REEP we map what the discipline has contributed to the debate across all four justice dimensions — distributive, restorative, procedural, recognition — and where it needs to catch up. 👇

New WP with Niklas Kramer and Théo Konc. Germany's 2023 heating-ban debate left a mark: people who felt disproportionately hit by the costs lost trust in government & willingness to pay for future climate policy — lasting even after the ban was shelved.

Who is affected by #climate policy? Effects are very heterogenous across households, countries and income groups. Rich vs poor is not a good predictor, but it matters where people live, which appliances they own, etc.. In a new paper @jeem-econ.bsky.social we quantify the effects for 88 countries.

Most people in Germany clueless how new EU carbon price will affect heating costs – survey
Many people in Germany have no idea that the planned expansion of EU carbon pricing could significantly push up their fossil fuel heating costs, in some scenarios by well over 1,000 euros per year, a survey by heat pump company Aira has found. While a large majority could not adequately predict cost increases, nearly a quarter of respondents had not even heard of the upcoming reform, the company said.
