@maxwellfrost.bsky.social: You can see the racism blatantly with TPS. Look at what they did with TPS for Hati. They want to essentially exile 450,000 Haitians, which, by the way, 1/4 of our caretakers for elders in the state of Florida are Haitians. So this impacts everybody."

Very much like the mythology “sure, fascists are cruel, but they get the trains running on time” when the reality is that the trains have stopped running entirely and fascists just lie about it.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

The Harper's Letter/U. of Austin vanguard loathes both protests & young people on principle—but the "67" slogan is the opposite of "dumb." It's a historically-minded joke that casts the current uprising as the heir to the May '68 student revolt while winking at Gen Alpha meme-speak. Crack a book?

Another thing that the abolitionists understood! Not just that slavery was wicked because of its consequences for the enslaved, but that having the kind of control over another human being slavery allows causes your soul and the society that surrounds you to become more wicked by that fact alone.

Serfdom and slavery! Abolitionists correctly identified this dynamic where they understood slavery was not only a crime against those enslaved but also against free workers - a direct threat to replace workers' essential freedom to bargain for better wages with enslaved labor that can't.

Being a billionaire in the United States feels basically identical whether you have $10B or $100B, but feels very different if you can sexually harass your au pair and she can quit and get a different job vs if she is desperate to keep her job and has to put up with it because the economy is shit.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Under financial capitalism, profit is the prime directive. But care is too labor-intensive to be profitable at the level of compensation needed for sustainability. And it can't be easily automated at the level of quality required for human needs.

So, historically, men have used the privilege afforded to them by patriarchy to push the "unprofitable" work of care onto women, making it easier for them to hoard the more profitable (and thus higher-status) work for themselves. And companies encouraged this, because it meant more profits for them.

Charles Dickens witnessed a public execution in 1849. He wrote a scathing letter to 'The Times' calling for the end to such a practice. 200 years later and here we are again. Public executions, fear mongering about immigrants, and (basically) poor laws. Go read Bleak House and get some compassion.
