I probably won’t see Digger but it would’ve been an A+ Letterman topic. “Hey Paul, uh, you seen Digger?” etc.

One of my favorite things I’ve ever put in these newsletters.
Archers Fan Club
You know, when I first started writing these Scorsese dossiers, I assumed the biggest recurring threads would be asthma or drugs or any of the other hackneyed Scorsese talking points—many of which I’ve lovingly regurgitated here in the digital pages of this weekly newsletter. Instead, however, at least with these early films, so much of Marty’s career seems to have been the result of the great Michael Powell giving Scorsese some good advice. In this dossier alone, it was Powell who helped Scorsese realize he wasn’t meant to direct the Broadway musical The Act, who inspired Scorsese to veer away from the real-life story and not have Jake LaMotta read Shakespeare, who told Scorsese that the boxing gloves shouldn’t be red, thereby leading Scorsese to film Raging Bull in gorgeous black-and-whiteBut even when Michael Powell the Friend wasn’t giving direct advice to Scorsese, Michael Powell the Filmmaker’s influence was ever-present. “Marty was watching Michael Powell’s Tales of Hoffman all during Raging Bull because of the movement in it,” said Scorsese’s editor—and Powell’s soon-to-be wife—Thelma Schoonmaker. “He said that Michael Powell taught him so much about physical and facial movement. He was watching it over and over again. He would stop, run it back and forth, and back and forth.”9 But this was 1979/1980, and Tales of Hoffmann wouldn’t receive an American home video release until Criterion put it out on LaserDisc in 1992 (with a commentary track from Scorsese, of course).10 Instead, Scorsese had to check out an archival 16mm print when he wanted to view the film, resulting in a problem: he wasn’t the only legendary director influenced by Tales of Hoffmann. “One time he wanted it and couldn’t get it,” Schoonmaker told Mary Pat Kelly. “[The museum] kept telling him, ‘The film is out. The film is out.’ And I remember, once, he said, ‘Who is this? Who keeps borrowing the film besides us? I want to know who it is.’ And you know, it was the director George Romero, who is one of the biggest fans in the world of Tales of Hoffmann.”11And boy was he. When Romero submitted his Sight and Sound ballot in 2002, he listed the first 9 films in alphabetical order, only breaking form for the last entry—Tales of Hoffmann—explaining, “This is one notch out of alphabetical order, but I decided to give it the status of last position because it’s my favourite film of all time; the movie that made me want to make movies.”12 On Criterion’s future home video releases of Tales of Hoffmann—a DVD in 2005, a Blu-ray in 2022—alongside Scorsese’s commentary track for the film was a video interview with Romero.
