![But even when Michael Powell the Friend wasn’t giving direct advice to Scorsese, Michael Powell the Filmmaker’s influence was ever-present. “Marty was watching Michael Powell’s Tales of Hoffman all during Raging Bull because of the movement in it,” said Scorsese’s editor—and Powell’s soon-to-be wife—Thelma Schoonmaker. “He said that Michael Powell taught him so much about physical and facial movement. He was watching it over and over again. He would stop, run it back and forth, and back and forth.”9 But this was 1979/1980, and Tales of Hoffmann wouldn’t receive an American home video release until Criterion put it out on LaserDisc in 1992 (with a commentary track from Scorsese, of course).10 Instead, Scorsese had to check out an archival 16mm print when he wanted to view the film, resulting in a problem: he wasn’t the only legendary director influenced by Tales of Hoffmann. “One time he wanted it and couldn’t get it,” Schoonmaker told Mary Pat Kelly. “[The museum] kept telling him, ‘The film is out. The film is out.’ And I remember, once, he said, ‘Who is this? Who keeps borrowing the film besides us?
