You can’t reduce the benefits bill by arbitrarily naming a cash figure you’d cut like £50bn. To do it in a sustainable way you need to give more opportunities to young people so they’re in work. But reforming the system for young people will require painful choices, says Alan Milburn.

The rate of price rises is starting to increase again, driven by the rising cost of energy. This is coming at a time when families are already struggling with the high cost of essentials from earlier periods of inflation.
Line chart showing UK change in CPI price levels by spending category from Jul 2021 to Jul 2026: electricity, gas and other fuels spike above 100% then fall; food rises steadily toward ~40%; petrol is volatile; overall CPI and average weekly earnings climb gradually.

The Bank of England delivers good news on the cost of borrowing, but bad news on the cost of living ⤵️
Quote tweet
James Smith, Chief Economist at the Resolution Foundation, said:
“The Bank’s decision today to hold interest rates was welcome but expected. The real news instead came via an overhaul of how it unwinds QE and a gloomy outlook for inflation.
“The Bank provided welcome clarity on how it plans to run down its stock of gilts bought as part of its QE program. Allowing the Debt Management Office to manage the process, avoiding large sales of unwanted long-dated bonds, is welcome as it will ease upward pressures on the cost of government borrowing.
“But while there was welcome news on the cost of borrowing, the outlook on the cost of living was sobering. The Bank’s forecast of a 24 per cent rise in the energy price cap this January would mean bills soaring during the coldest months of the year, while 4 per cent inflation will mean pay packets shrinking sharply in real terms.
“This gloomy forecast should focus the government’s mind on the need to have targeted support with energy

Private and specialist dental practices are on the rise across England 📈 What does this mean for NHS dentistry? Check out our latest analysis to find out more: buff.ly/ZWoovUC
Choropleth map of England showing the percentage change in dental practices not offering NHS general dentistry between 2016/17 and 2025/26. Headline reads: “Private and specialist dental practices rise across England”.

Text states: “% change in practices not offering NHS general dentistry (2016/17-2025/26). Average across England: 32%”. A colour scale ranges from 0% to 53%, with darker shades representing larger increases in practices not offering NHS general dentistry.

The map shows increases across all parts of England, but with considerable variation between areas. Darker-shaded areas in the South West, the North East, parts of eastern England and several regions in the Midlands indicate some of the largest increases. Lighter-shaded areas in parts of the South East, London and central southern England show smaller increases. The graphic highlights the widespread growth of private and specialist dental practices across England over the period.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.
