Burnham has called for proportional representation. SV is absolutely not a proportional representation system. It is not clear if Burnham knows this but it is pretty certain that those appointed to an electoral reform commission charged with considering a move to PR will know this.

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

Welfare changes under debate include ending key disability benefit for under-25s
Exclusive: Plan under discussion involves intensive package of support to help young people into employment Ministers are working up sweeping plans for welfare changes including scrapping a key disability benefit for under-25s and replacing it with a multibillion-pound package of support to get into work, the Guardian has learned. Multiple Whitehall sources said the package of changes under debate was much bigger than previously thought, as Andy Burnham’s government hopes to persuade more people on benefits back into work. Always struck by the Kemi commitment to "we will do the same thing again, but this time it will work because I'll be stricter." It's an opposition that is at war with its own time in Government.
Under current Universal Credit requirements, external, people have to sign a "claimant commitment" to prepare for and look for work or increase their earnings if they are already working - but the Tories claim their rules would be stricter.

The proposals were announced on Thursday ahead of the party's conference starting this weekend.

How should a national commission on electoral reform be designed?
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister announced a national commission on electoral reform. In this article originally published in the Conversation UK, Alan Renwick explains that such a body should secure public involvement, not aim for a particular result and listen to the experts. He also emphasises that any change to the electoral system should be carried out with the greatest possible care.
